50 profile feels much better. Looks better on the car too.

I have 245/50/R18 ContiSportContacts 3 with huge rim protector and I love them.

im having so many problems finding them in 245 50 18 part worn, im not getting new untill i have tested it out, but every where i phone say that its an odd size, i will have to have a look at your wheels again when i see you next, they do look massive on the car

245/50x18 tyres may be more comfortable (the 45's are comfortable enough) but your handling, especially turn-in will be pretty spongy.

Too much compliance in such a tall sidewall, coupled with a big car that weighs well over 1800 kgs.

i have found a happy medium after much trial and error yesterday, i now have fitted : on the front i have continental conti sports in 255 45 18 and on the rear i have pirelli P zero, in a 255 45 18

much to my surprise the 255 45 18 are a taller tire than the 245 45 18 no idea why this is but when the 245 were next to the 255 it was the 255 that was a taller tire even though they are both 45 profile

any way the ride is amazing so much better and the turn in to corners with the continentals on the front is 40% better than the bridgestone potenza i had

the Guy at the tyre shop recomended this set up as he used to be in motorsport at first i thought it was so odd not to have the same tires all round, in fact i have never had tires that are not a full set before, but now they are on the car it all makes perfect sense and i kind of think the Guy was mad but a genius

what a crazy set up that just works so perfectly im still in shock i think,

the profile is always a percentage of the width Guy
The width is in mm so a 255 45 18 will always have a slightly higher side wall than a 245 45 18 as there is 45% of a slightly higher figure.

You need to be careful mixing and matching tyres with a slightly different rolling radius even front to back on a quattro as if there is more than around 1% difference in rolling radius then the quattro may think that there is some slip on the wheels as it is getting a different length of time to turn the wheel of one to the other

The tyre calculator at http://www.alloywheels.com/Tyre_Calculator says you are more than 1% out so be careful!

Tyre Size Diameter Circumference Difference Speedo Fits Wheel Rim
---------- -------- ------------- ---------- ------ --------------
245/45 R18 678 mm 2130 mm 0.00 % 70.00 8x18 to 9.5x18
255/45 R18 686 mm 2155 mm 1.17 % 70.82 8.5x18 to 10x18

all four tyres i have fitted are a 255 45 18
the only difference is that the front 2 tyres are continentals and the 2 rear are pirelli P zero

drives really good though, just wandering but how do you get on with having 21" wheels with a 295 on the rear and a narrower tyre on the front ? how would that affect the car ?

Ahh ok if they are all the same then no problem

I've got used to the tram lining and the slightly increased tendency to go straight on with my Kahn wheels now. The fronts are 255 and the rears 295 but there's no great difference in rolling radius. If I wanted to race around the nurburgring I would just fit the final editions lol
