Front driveshaft gaiter
MOT due in a few days, and found the gaiter on the driver's side front to be split.
Any idea what sort of a job to replace it? Do I have to dismantle the front suspension? Any advice welcome

It's even easier than that. Here is a bit more help.
To remove the half shaft: 1. Take out cener cap on wheel. 2. With wheel on the ground crack the half shaft bolt. You will need a big breaker bar. 3. Undo the anti roll bar 4. Crack the six torx bolts at the output flange. 4. Undo the lower control arms at the subframe. you may ned to lower the subframe slghtly. undo the 6 bolts on the inner shaft 5. Pull the suspension away fron the car and ease out the half shaft.

....or just drop it at QST for an hour and get them to do it

There are several ways of doing it. I normally do not take driveshaft off, just pull it out of wheel hub then CV joint off. And to do that I disconnect lower suspension arms at the wheel hub not at the subframe.
The 6 bolts at output flange should be replaced or at least threadlock used when putting back as I have seen them get loose/come out on several occasions if old ones are reused without threadlock. Therefor I do not get them out if I do not have to. |

Hi Guys,
just to echo Ainarssems feelings about dropping hub bolts rather than the sub frame end, I would suggest this is good practice, and, if hub extraction was ever the intention, it makes for a less cumbersome unit once at liberty!! Best Regards, Steve |
