Default 2006 A8 with 3GP

On and off over the last year I've been reading, buying and doing a 3GP install.

It start off when my mate fitted 3GP to his A6 C6 and I thought it was cool but couldn't really justify the expense.
He then decided to chop it in when the scrappage scheme came about and buy a new C7.
He removed the 3GP items and sold them to me.
I've had the bits for most of the last year but only recently started bolting it all together and getting far enough to show people and ask for a spot of help.

I'm not sure where to put this though. D3 cause its in a D3 or D4/other cause its from a 2015 A8/Q7.
If you feel it should go somewhere else, move it.

I really should have wrote this down and done pics each steps of the way but I didn't.

I find it funny cause I bought the A8 with the intention to not retrofit anything to it, at least not to the level that I did to my A4. I guess I failed.

The point for me to go to 3GP was the challenge and the extra gadgets...........OK, Google maps.
But now that I've got this far, I'm not 100% sure on the benefit of 3GP over 3G.
You got Google Maps, Sim card and internal harddrive but with build in AMI, twin SD slots and BT, I'm not sure.
Unless there's other extras that I'm missing?

To go 3GP from 2G you need to remove everything from the 2G system.
2G:
Can Gateway.
Screen.
MMI Head.
AMI.
CD changer.
Sat Nav DVD player.
Cluster.
Radio.
TV.
AMP/s
Bluetooth.
Phone Prep.
Heater controls.

For 3GP you need:
Entertainment system (5F).
Screen.
Heater controls.
MMI panel.
Cluster.
Can gateway.
Radio.
TV.
AMP/s.

You will need to make adaptor cables for:
2G to 3GP radio.
26 to 20 pin gateway.
MMI Head to 5F.
Reversing camera to quad lock blue plug.
Fakra cable extension cable for the GPS and Bluetooth aerial.
AMI to quadlock and 4 pin Fakra.
Screen to 5F cable.
Direct power from the fuse box to quadlock.

I think that is it for modules and cabling.
If you get that far, you then got the CP to remove, Green menu to configure and normal VCDS coding.
You'll need to flash the car image on the 5F unit, mine is still showing a Q7 but when the system is fully in I'll look in to getting it flashed to a D3 or a D4.

With all the above done there is still the chance of menus/options being greyed out or different from what you currently have on the 2G system.
For example is the central locking menu, mood lighting and system menu.

I've attached some images from the install.

I've still got a couple of things to iron out.
CP is activated on the BOSE amps or Gateway, I'm not sure but I can't remove it.
I need to finish off the wiring for the Bose amp, only rear speakers for for Satnav and phone.
I need to wire up the microphone/s.
I'd like to get the AMI wired in but but there is a serious lack of space in the glove box for the 5F and I think the Fakra cables are stopping it from going back alway.
Might need to cut the back of the glove box out. I'll look at that when I have to remove it again.

If there is anything specific you need or want to know, please post and I'll do my best to answers.

Thanks for taking the time to share this Scott, I imagine it will become a useful reference point for anyone else thinking of freshening up their D3 tech

Not a problem mate.

Like others who has done this, I won't keep it to myself for personal gain.

If we all combine our experiences of we might get a better final build.

Extra little bit for the 3GP install.

A MMI panel from a A6 C7.
Going to plug this in and see how it works, then look at getting it modded to fit the centre console.

Thanks.
Its a long road and no ending yet to get it 100%.

The C7 panel doesn't fit. Its to wide and possibly to deep.
I'm not prepared to cut the center console apart.

I'm looking at alternatives and some spare parts to cut about.
If anyone happen to have a faulty/dead MMI panel and trim they don't want, let me know.
