Since we're on the subject, watch out for the cameras on the M4 and M5 around Bristol - they are active all the time, regardless of the variable speed limit. I've seen the one between the M32 and M5 go off twice in two days with the signs off, and not at particularly high speeds either.

I was involved in the first phase of the variable signs on UK Motorways, the so called "Matrix Signs".
The plan in those days was to develop what we are getting these days, "Smart Motorways".
Part of the plan was for the variable speed cameras to work in conjunction with the signed speed limit. But the part that was never shouted about was the bit that MickiJayne has mentioned. The cameras would monitor at the National Limit when the signs appeared to be inoperative.
So please be aware because all speed cameras could be simply modified to work that way.
Also watch out for permanently fitted "average speed" cameras, not just the temporary road works ones. Remember these are fitted with infrared light sources for nightime use. They are usually signposted for the first few weeks of live useage but that only helps regular users.
Maybe a reasonable idea to start a sticky for members to update as and when they discover new ones.

Speed limits are being imposed now just to attempt to meet EU pollution levels even though it never seems to make a difference due to the trend of wood burning stoves.

On this topic, is there a way of adding POIs for speed cameras to our sat Nav's in the cars? Specifically for me in my D3 S8?

I know I'm the old days there was a POI drag n drop into my tomtom (showing my age)

Or at the least a very good reliable app for iOS?

TomTom have an app called TomTom Go which works on iPhone
I've had TomTom Western Europe for many years which I love but they are ceasing to support that app from september as it has been superseded by the new one. I think you can upload POI's to it but I have a monthly traffic subscription which costs something like £1.80 a month and includes the speed cameras and warnings for them at the same time. The traffic add on is epic as it constantly looks for issues and improvements to route on a live basis to get you there in the best time

That app might be worth getting. Now I just need an iphone.

Does anyone have any experience with speeding fines in Europe. I remember there was talk a while back that they are going to link up the systems with the DVLA so if a camera in France caught you they post the fine to your home in the UK.

I seriously hope they haven't managed to implement this

Yes, I've been fined in both the Montecarlo and Italy - in both cases they came in the post, Italy was an Avis rentacar and in Montecarlo was my aunt's car that I borrowed.

Its only monetary, you wont get points
