Thanks. When my VCDS returns I shall be giving that a go.
I tried turning on the ignition and leaving for a minute today but there was no change in the behaviour.
Thanks for the advice on the cats.
Again, I shall rescan soon and then investigate that issue. Sounds expensive to me. I've not repriced cats and I don't particularly want to

Well this happened again last night.

Ran a VCDS scan this morning and it was totally clean (apart from the usual alarm horn battery low warning). Last scan was in December.

As I turned into the main road and speeded up I realised the revs were high and progress wasn't as fast as expected, but it did change up at least one gear, still with high revs. 30 limit so didn't test more changes.
The usual lift-off and press again with the right foot resumed normal progress with the quick "something changed" feeling/movement from the gearbox, drop in revs and the usual responsiveness.

Prior to this the car had been driven a few miles so was fairly warm, then sat for about 15 minutes on my drive. I then got in and drove about 200 yards downhill to the main road, stopped briefly and turned right.

Any thoughts anyone?

Mine used to do exactly the same, as I mentioned earlier in the thread. I'm pretty sure it was a new brake pedal switch that cured it. Trying to remember if it ever occurred after that and before I had the gearbox rebuilt (and the F125 switch replaced) but the fault seems to be completely gone now. Even if your brake switch is properly adjusted, it may be that the contacts are a little dirty/sticky. Next time it does it, perhaps try tapping the brake pedal with your left foot.

Thanks, will do if I remember and road conditions allow.

How accessible is it, would a spray with WD-40 or contact cleaner be possible/advisable?

I don't know to be honest. Mine was diagnosed and replaced by a garage. Apart from the rather uncomfortable, upside-down, head-in-the-footwell position you would need to be in, I think it's fairly accessible. It didn't take the garage long to replace it and there was no major disassembly involved. I believe it just screws in a bit like this . The contacts aren't immediately accessible though so of course you'd need to remove it, dismantle it, clean the contacts, re-assemble it, re-install it and re-adjust it.

From memory, it looks a lot like this (not sure if this is the correct one for the vehicle though):
https://www.europaparts.com/brake-li...a0945515a.html
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A8-D2...-/131044274874

I think I may have my old one somewhere that I could disassemble and photograph. I'll have a quick look for it now ...

Thanks very much for the links, but don't bother doing that I'll probably just replace it.

I can get one for about £15 and they're not much more from VAG. I'll investigate when the weather improves, it's not an urgent problem.

Too late, I already did

To be honest I was curious what the internal condition of mine was. It seems the top contacts are a little burnt.

Not much room to get a screwdriver in to prise it open either. Had to use a Stanley knife blade and still managed to break one of the clips.

Hopefully that's the problem with yours. It seems to me the main causes are the brake switch and and the F125 switch (assuming no traction control light). Since the brake switch is the cheaper and more accessible part, I'd certainly consider changing that first.

Mark pretty much describes it perfectly how you get at it. I know when I changed my brake switch, I removed the lower dash trim and ventilation piping going to the doors.

When refitting the new brake switch, use VCDS to ensure it's set right. I thought I was being smart by measuring how far in the original one was, and matching it. Turns out I was half a turn out, which was causing me the same issues as you, although mine were more regular.

There is a thread somewhere on here where it tells you what to do in VCDS, which I'll try and track down for you.

Thanks Sean.
Having just reread (all earlier in this thread) what you did I might just try adjusting it; maybe it is just a bit too sensitive at the moment so not always freeing up properly after gentle braking?
I did note:

A VERY LIGHT touch on the pedal (engine off) would change it to 1010 but the slightest bit more and it went to 1011.
That sequence could be reversed by lifting off very carefully.
What is required to adjust it, do you just loosen the locking nut and turn it?
I assume from the diagrams I've seen that it's "above" the pedal so would need screwing "down" towards it to ensure it was in the "no braking" position.

I saw that MJ said something about it being possible to fit it in the wrong position, but was that and orientation issue or just how far in/out it was because of the two separate switches?
(I think just an in-out issue rereading carefully)

I did earlier say:
