Default MMMNNN..could be pricey

Just brought a Audi A8 4.2 quattro from a dealer in Exeter but luckily i paid extra for a warranty...now problem.....handbrake was a lill slack when i took her home ..but thought hey ho cant be much...fook me....took it into a garage today they say the handbrake calliper is seized and needs new callipers, new discs and pads....
Callipers...£226 x2
discs........£50.00 x2
pads,,,,,,,£50.00
labour....?????

I went bonkers....phoned the dealer and he was shocked to say the least..(problem i have is i live in thatcham,,150 miles from where i brought it...dealer says."if you were local we would sort it put and give you a curtious car untill its fixed ,but cus you live in thatcham and its 150 miles away its a problem"

Now my predicerment...is the dealer liable as he sold me a car (1 week old) that is not working properley and therefour the warranty will shorley be invalid as they have not carried out correct checks..

dealer says he will phone me tomorrow and discuss my options....

Mate, get your calipers from A8 parts, my calipers seized and they sent me out a new set the very next day. I think there vented or something so would be quite pricey getting them new. This should bring the price down a lot. About the pads and discs, I don't really think you can argue with the dealer on that basis as it would just come down as general wear and tear, however maybe maybe you could on the seized calipers? If you know someone with a garage and are at all handy I suggest you get them to get the discs and pads at trade price for you then use Audipages guide to fit them yourself? My local independent only wanted £40 to do my front pads and discs. Oh BTW, and not strictly relevant, there are four pads in each front caliper!
Hope this doesn't put you off A8 ownership mate, I know that A8 parts has saved me thousands so far, for example. A driveshaft from Audi was 5-600. From A8 Parts CIRCA £80

My recommendation is that the dealer must honour the warranty as far as the Callipers are concerned. Is the warranty with the dealer. Most aren't and you can get the car fixed at any independent and claim against the warranty.

If the warranty is with a separate company they will get a sad on with the dealer as the goods were not fit for sale.

Given its only a week I think you should be bullish and go back to the dealer and get all problems fixed. Note that the handbrake is self adjusting so if its still slack after new callipers, disks and pads then it requires new cables.

For reference the tolerances on the disks are for my 98 S8 (Don't know what year yours is):

150 miles is a pain to travel, but get him to get the parts in and then take it down to get the work done, should be less than a half-day for all the work.

I concur - Whilst we can sort you with all sorts of second hand parts - If the dealer is willing to fit you brand spanking new ones, it would be well advised as the rear calipers are a common failure, so the newer the better when someone else is picking up the tab

Well, got a phone call from the garage that is going to do my brakes so i took a mosey down there to see what the dealer sent him.....he sent him new pads, new discs and reconditioned callipers but look pretty good....

But...talking to the garage they want me to pay the labour and then me sort out with the dealer about reinbursment,,,,Thing is my 16 year olds a trainee mechanic down there so im going to play ball with them and then chase the dealer for payment.....
Any idea how long it should take to do,,,callipers, discs and pads...

I should expect 2 hours labour. It can be done in an hour if you have a pressure bleeder and a mate. So 2 hours labour is probably what you'll be charged.

A little ****ed off now,,,got my new brake discs, pads and handbrake works and when i got the bill...labour £160.00+vat +brake fluid---£190.00..fook me that sounded a little too much for me..paid them direct and phoned the garage who i brought the car off..(4 weeks ago now)..said he was told by the garage 2 hours..as said by you guys...said fax him the bill to confirm and he will send a cheque

Now im a understanding chap and i realise with a big lump you might get some probs but i have two leaks..one looks like its the seal to the gearbox and the other is coming from somewhere in the engine down one side..any ideas and costs
The seal to the gearbox i gather is quite easy with the right kit but i havent a clue on the engine or how much its going to cost

You will have to find out where the engine is leaking from before anyone can give you an idea of cost, like I said earlier an oil pressure switch is only about three quid from GSF or a tenner from Audi, Rocker covers will set you back £60 and are an Audi only part, I'd say 1.5 hours labour from a garage or if your handy attempt it yourself! Hope its all sorted soon for you fella

Where about is the engine leak? Can you pin it down. As Singh said Rocker Covers, Oil pressure switch are common as are perished breather pipes but you would have other symptoms with them.
