Yes, as others said, this car is so easy, hardly have to bend over, let alone lie down. I use this one http://www.a1plantsales.com/pumps-c5...phon-p343/s343
and it comes with 3 semi-rigid pipes of declining diameter that join together. The largest two are needed for this job and stick it down the dipstick tube until you feel it stop (hits bottom) and then pull out 15mm or so to stop it being restricted on the bottom of the sump. Pump a vacuum with the handle and it fills up with and cuts off when full, you then have to drain into an old 5 litre container and do the other 3-4 litres. When it starts gurgling, push the tube down to the bottom to remove the ullage.

There is usually some left in the bottom of the filter housing that I suck out too, maybe an egg-cup full.

I also evacuate the power steering fluid reservoir and refill with the green CHF11S at every oil change - that is about £7-12 a litre depending on supplier and offers (GSF is good when the have the 40% off code at weekends)

Sometimes the oil is £18.99 a pack on ebay, but not today.

Take the old oil to the tip in old oil or washer fluid containers.

Thanks Guys, once again, for all your useful and helpful advice.

I happened to be in Lidl yesterday and picked up the oil pump thay had on sale, so I'm going to 'give it a go' with that.

Just one last query I forgot to add earlier:

What VCDS SRI options do you perform? [Set and oil change as 'longlife'; set as 'longlife' but oil change and SRI after 12 months/10000 miles; set and oil change as 'fixed' 12 months/10000 miles]?

[I see that these 'unbranded' oils claim to be for 'Longlife' service and have low SAPS contents for DPF equipped Diesels [like mine]].

Regards - Julian

The only slight problem is you need an extension from the D3's battery in the boot or use a separate battery to power the oil pump (like I do).

I didn't alter any service reminders with VCDS.

Is there no jump start terminals under the bonnet on D3?

No. I just reset my reminders automatically, and but I change the oil every 6 months/7,000 miles so I am resetting it long before it comes up with a message

It's an oversight in my book. One they put right in the D4, I believe. Even my 1998 BMW e46, and I think even my 1994 e36 had a positive terminal under the bonnet.

I've just bought the Lidl special too. Whinced when I saw the length of the leads. Still, seems like a nice bit of kit.

Thumbs up

Original text: 7th Mar

OK Guys, so here I am ready to go.

I've got the oil [10 litres], the new oil filter and the oil pump, but now I'm not so sure!

etc.

Update: 14th Mar

I 'bit the bullet', stuck the thin tube down the 'dipstick tube' and sucked out over 10 litres of old black oil. [Had to give up after 10 litres as that was all I had to replace it]! Just refilled and started the engine; running fine and I'm almost £200 better off than if the dealer had done it.

Thanks for all the advice guys ...

Regards - Julian

Supposed to be 8.2 litres I usually add one and a half 5 litre jugs before adding bit by bit and checking with dipstick when warm.
