I ultimately replaced the sensor. Got a new one from Cardiff Audi (I think) for £40 in the end off ebay. Got Amersham Audi to fit it in the end because I couldn't face the battle again. It was for cars that left the factory on 18 inch wheels, but the only difference is the positioning of the clips along the cable (apparently) and either sensor will fit either car. Very strange that they specified a different cable run for cars which came from the factory on 20 inch wheels. I confirmed this with our site sponsor.

So in short, unless you're really picky, don't worry if it is a D or E part number. Worth the saving...

Correct part number is 4d0927803d for cars with up to 18" wheels. ETKA suggests the cable is actually shorter on cars with 20" wheels so maybe takes a more direct path or the factory loom ends closer to the wheel?

I got an e suffix for £70 but haven't seen a new one pop up since and that was in 2011!

Search Europe wide with this as the search term on ebay and it should find a dozen or so results, not all correct and some used too.

Just been investigating under the car and thats the part number on the cable too. Thanks for the confirmation. When I was at the garage investigating the issue, when the tech got onto the parts supplier he broke off to ask whether it had 20" FE wheels but as Zip states it should be an issue.

Although the hex head screw came out easily the sensor is not willing to budge. Will continue to try but its proving a real sod.

Having failed to remove the sensor, I gave it a good bollocking and put it all back together and took it for a run. Warning lights havent come back on after 20 min drive (it has usually come on within 1-2 miles). Whether there is a faulty cable or not is hard to determine as I couldnt replicate it by wiggling the cable about.

Ah well, I'll give it a couple of days and see what happens.

It might be best just to cut out the middle of cable and replace it without removing sensor. That's what I did on mine. It's a bit trickier on FL as it goes in the sleeve together with pad wear cable but should be possible.

The garage told me that they usually end up having to forcibly remove the sensor and, in 75% of cases, it gets damaged in the process. It aint a simple push fit removal as in the Audipages article!

Also, I havent found a replacement for anything like £40 on Ebay - cheapest was c£110!

If still looking:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A8-FR...E:B:SS:GB:1123

Around £100 with postage which is at least a decent saving on Audi

Just been looking to sort my ABS sensor issue and came across Hoffman Car Parts where they have A8/S8 sensor for €70 plus postage. Anyone used these guys before - and is this the correct part? (its a good price). The part number is that posted by Adrian and they look like the bit I'm struggling to remove.

I'd drop them a line and ask what the letter at the end of the part number is, as that's critical(ish) depending on fitment. If they can't tell you ask them to measure the length and compare to what you have now
