Thanks for the posts, think I'm getting there.

So it seems like either Quantum IIRC or Shell Helix Ultra Extra is the best, and also Castrol Edge 5w-30.

I agree with all, the best oil is the best choice, just a few last points:

Firstly, my car is 1998 S8 137k miles.

- Older cars get mentioned for different oil compared to newer cars, what the reasoning behind this?

- I've looked on Opie Oils and found the Castrol Edge 5w-30, does this sound like the best buy for me? If not, where's the best place to get the best oil?

- Is 5w-30 better than 10w-40 for my car?

Thanks again

George

Hi chaps,

Per my post above, I've gone for Castrol Edge 5w-30.

From previous posts this seems to be a good choice, your thoughts?

Thanks

George

If I feed mine the grade of fully synthetic oil specified it drinks it at an alarming rate. After being beaten for my foolishness by the independent that services mine I was persuaded to use semi synthetic. It drank a litre in the first 1000 miles after the oil change and then stopped. This was a '96 4.2 with 110k on it. My new one (97 40v, 97k) had an oil change with fully synth just before I bought it and also drinks oil. It will receive oil and filter change this week and I'll report if it stops. Usual qualifiers apply that no, I'm not getting blue smoke or anything noticeable, it's just thirsty.

I had mine serviced with Ben at 3.5k miles ago and the engine oil level hasn't changed since then!

My succession of D2 A8s is now in double figures and if problems arise with the engines I suspect it may not be the long service interval, but that people simply assume they can do 20k miles without even having the oil checked. I know a warning will eventually show up, but I've lost count of how many 4.2 Audis I've looked at and on checking the oil level from cold found that it wasn't even showing on the dipstick although the warning light to check oil had not been coming on.

I can't imagine that does the engines any good.

your right, as i remember picking up my facelifted d2 s8 in germany when i bought it. the oil level light came on while driving back home on the autobahn.

i think it lights up when 2 litres low ?, which means the engine still has 5.5 litres left, as it takes 7.5 lt. to fill. (huge sump) which should be ok ?

even modern vw/audi 4 cylinder diesels only hold 4 liters full, should be more really. but i guess the car manufacturers are in the business of selling more cars, parts and servicing.

it seems in the 90's german cars were over engineered, like tanks, built to last decades,(bmw e34's, merc 124's) but then they got too clever and realized 70% of sales went to companys with fleets that sell their cars after 3 years and 90000 miles. so after yr 2000, manufacturers redesigned them, to last just that long.

Hello all,

Thanks forthe help.

Well I managed to get some decent oil, but unfortunately it it was tipped into a bad stomach so passed straight through. A couple of Rocker Gaskets later all is well... touch wood.

I've got another question though, does anyone know where there is a dummies guide to changing the oil and oil filter? I'm due a service in a few 1,000 miles or so and I'm trying to collate the info i need to be able to do it myself.

I'm also looking for somewhere that shows how to change brake discs and pads, pictures would help!

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

George
