Default key fob not working

Hi guys, it's been a wee while since i posted. The A8 was running well with no real problems except for the wing mirrors going dark now and then (I found using the key in the ignition and cycling the glow plugs stopped the mirrors darkening 90% of the time).

A couple of weeks ago a woman pulled out from stationary traffic right in front of me and both cars got totalled. Luckily I was going slow, about 20mph so nobody was hurt but these A8s have a lot of inertia!

Anyway.... new car and new problems.

I bought a 2008 4.2TDi high miler from northern ireland. Big mistake buying on the basis of pictures. Yes it looked great in the pics and description but the pics conveniently didnt show any of the bad parts, no power boot lid for instance, toolbox missing etc. Generally good though, nice inside. Fully loaded did not mean fully loaded though. Paintwork took a fair bit of work to get looking presentable and will still need some more.

Price was good though so was happy enough.... until......

Tried to lock it when I got home, key fob not working. will not lock the doors. Tried locking with the boot lock but it doesnt do the central locking. Used the drivers key but it doesnt seem to put the car to sleep and the next day the battery was totally flat.

Often, with the key on my person the car will unlock (without pressing the button on the handle) but usually doesnt. None of the buttons on the key fob are working, although it will occasionally lock the car. I have changed the battery in the fob and did the synching procedure but still nothing.

Can i program a random key (I have several audi keys of various ages, one is from the D2) to lock and unlock the car?

I can buy from ebay, "audi" keys with rfid chips etc and blank blades. I can imagine that these can be programmed to the locking but will they actually start the car?

Two of the door handles are coming up with fault codes and one central locking motor is coming up with a fault as well. I wonderif its the door handles that are stopping it from locking. Full auto scan results in next post...

Thanks guys, gill

Try calling Craig from Auto Solutions - he came to our annual meet and does key cutting and coding but he also travels the country and would be able to call in on you when he is next up there -

Cheers, i will drop him a line. May need something a little sooner though.

Another thing I just remembered after going to the shop. It keeps telling me that the key battery is dead, even though it is brand new. not every time by any means but often enough to be annoying. I am just using the ignition slot just now instead of the keyless.

Small point but you appear to say that you're unlocking your car by pressing the button on the handle. That button is for locking the car, and once locked it should unlock when you grab the handle to pull it to open the door, no button pressing required.

Best of luck sorting this out.

Sorry that's me being unclear. Sometimes the car unlocks just by grabbing the handle but usually doesn't. The only time it does is on the few occasions that the car has successfully locked with the button on the fob.

The car never locks by pressing the button on the handle and it rarely locks by pressing the button on the fob. 95% of the time the buttons on the fob do nothing. Usually I have to lock the car by turning the lock on the drivers door manually with the key and then pushing the door fully closed (obviously the handle is up to fit the key under so it doesnt fully shut) This method however doesnt seem to put the car to sleep and the battery is dead by the morning.

None of the buttons on the doors lock the car.

Basically after spending thousands on a much newer A8, I'm back to carrying a spare battery because i have no faith that I will be able to start the thing again.

Wee update on this one, I'll start from the start.

Bought car, got message that key battery was low. Next morning wouldnt start, car battery flat.

Bought a pack of (generic, no name) batteries for the key fob and fitted one. Still didnt work. Tried another battery. Nothing.

Eventually bought a new key of ebay, used genuine advanced key, with the intention of fitting a blank blade and getting it programmed. For some reason I decided to swap the battery from the new key into the old one - phillips battery.

Car unlocked a couple of times as it should and locked with the fob. Then back to square one. Change key battery every tme car started.

On a whim I bought a pack of duracell batteries and tried on the key fob. Has worked every time since. Still doesnt lock with the button on the handle but locks with the fob and unlocks just by pulling on the handle.

Moral of the story... It appears the A8 is a battery snob. If you're having this issue and you're using cheapo batteries, try a name brand one in it.

Glad you have made progress! Get a VCDS scan done, £ to a penny it will show a faulty handle which will explain the ongoing issue
