Default Water inside boot lid

The other day I heard water sloshing when I opened the boot. Expecting to see a lot of water somewhere, all I got was a gentle dribble coming from behind the rear lid trim panel. We did have rain over the weekend, however it's something that has not happened before. Water has got in somewhere and all I can think of are 3 locations;

1, behind inner tails lights

2, licence plate light / trim

3, behind licence plate

I'll remove the rear lid trim panel this weekend and take a look. But before then has this happened to anyone else?

There's a load of discussion about similar on a D2, I just took out the grommets on the lower rear edge - there are 3 on a D2, centre and each corner.

On the D2 the general opinion seems to be the weakness is the grommets where the leads enter the boot lid near the front edge; the D3 ones look a bit more watertight though.

The lights seem well designed not to let in water. maybe the handle trim, I can see how water would get behind that and into the boot lid through some of the apertures, especially as the seal/gasket ages, it would run right in behind it but even that is a good design unless disturbed.

There are a number of grommets that I can remove to try and drain any remaining water.

As for the handle, it does seem to have a large seal. So worth checking that.

It was windy over the weekend and maybe that helped capillary action on a seal somewhere.

Where did you get that screen shot from Matt?

Is that some online parts thing.

Also worth checking is the condition of the cable grommets and trunking from the boot lid to the rear quarters

Does your car have reverse camera? I see you have extra cable ducting on the left side which is what I added to get my camera fitted.

Hi Del,

Yes that is a screen shot from an online parts base. The photo in the first post isn't my car, I took that from the internet as I didn't take any of my own photos at the time. Plus I thought a picture can explain better where the water escaped from. I don't have rear camera or a power lid on my 8.
