Ok so it's POETS day and I would like to spend less than 10 hours working on this. So I do the sensible thing and decide to do just a couple of tasks...

Task one was make sense of this.....

Which started at 0730 and ended with me almost stark raving mad so I stated some assembly and ended up like this at lunch....

Having had a nap I got on with some more assembly and some more elctric welding so by the end of work at 1700 it looked like this.............

The most fiddly bit is refitting the torque converter to the tranny, bolting the tranny to the engine then aligning the converter with the starter ring so that you can bolt up the 2 together. Loads of fun and cramp and neck ache and numb spots on yer bum!

Going back for an advanced session of self flagellation tomorrow. can't wait

During today's shooting I mostly hit anyone who deserved it and several that didn't but it made me laugh.........

Any person blah blah blah blah.....Get over it.

Default Yep! Definately downhill.

My wife has been saying I have been going downhill for sometime. Well this weekend I have mostly been going downhill.

I couldn't resist it and decided that some cleaning could be done. Started in the engine bay........

Then onto a bit of electric welding which saw me finish the repairs/mods to the loom......

The on to the engine went the loom. Has to ring a friend at one point as I was near tears again when I had 2 extra plugs and no where to put them. they were that lamba connectors and the cats are in the corner! Doh....

I also started on the suspension and of note the rear lower control arm can not be removed without lowering the subframe as the bolt can't come out far enough. So i have swapped it end over end, bit fiddlt but possible as seen here........

Then it was the turn of the front wheel arches. Last year I ran through some paint and didn't realise it until it was rock solid. A phone picture as I forgot my camera this morning...........

I used W&D wet (400 and 800) and just gently rubbed away. I'll get a better pic of the finished effort tomorrow.

Disclaimner:

I should not be followed even by the curious. I do not 'know' what I am doing.

Some great progress so far Mike.

Subject to cleaning time, should be in and running in another day or two.

Cheers guys. Funnily enough get things tight is today's theme.

My wife says I'm tight. Just cause I don't spend as much on her Mondaeo as I do on my 8. I've offered to but she didn't want 18s with ULP tyres and a after market turbo with front and rear splitters and adjustable suspension. She wanted pink mats and seat covers.............. Keep wanting!

Anyway to day I have mostly been assembling things. In fact the lump is back in!

I was really surprised how easy it went back in. The secret is removing it on its subframe. Taking the engine out alone would be impossible on your own but by removing the subframe with lump and box on it it is not that difficult. There is a lot more to undo but it's pretty straight forward.

I used the handrolic forklift again. A pallet truck would be just as good. Basically I used some wood chocks to raise the subframe up flat and wheeled it into the engine bay. With a bit of wiggling I got one subframe bolt in and the just screwed the engine about a bit until the opposite bolt went in. Then it was just a case of torqueing it all up! Not hard at all.

Got to have tea. More to follow

Mmmmmmm home made fried rice and garlic sausages!

Any way, I also started resembling the front suspension. As it was all off the car it was fairly straightforward. The 2 lower arms went back on before the subframe was refitted. the 2 upper arms were put back in the strut upper bracket before it was put back on the car. No herein lies a problem. You can't get a socket on the rear lower and upper arms bolts to torque them up when they are in the car.
See here

Bolts 5 and 23.

Here they are on the car

The problem is that are to close to the bodywork. So how do you torque them up to the 90Nm and 90° when you can't get a torque wrench in.
It's common knowledge that the suspension components should be torqued up when the are under load to avoid any pre-loading of the bushes.
After lots of discussions with some Navy engineers there are 2 possible ways to achieve this.
Method 1 - (long Winded) Rebuild suspension. load it up by putting and axle stand under the hub carrier and allowing the weight of the car to come on the suspension. Torque up all the control arms you can and mark the position of the control arms you can't so that after a further dismantling you can line up the control arms and torque them up before putting them back on the car.

Method 2 - (Quicker but less accurate) Practice torquing up the bolts when off the car and undo and redo them using a spanner. Check with your torque wrench. Once you are happy how much effort it needs, reassemble on the car, tighten with the spanner until you think you are there then do a further 90° and mark up the nut, washer and arm with a dash of paint and monitor.

Method 2 was the method I used.

A gratuitous picture of the state of the inner arch after I used W&D to remove the paint...

More tomorrow when I will mostly be attaching things and filling things with liquid and maybe electrifying things.

Disclaimer:

I really am stumbling along blindly with any person living or dead who will talk to me. Anyone who uses this work which is nobody's intellectual property maybe certifiable! :P

The lessons learned to day are:

Don't tell 'Dear Diary' what you intentions are for tomorrow! It's tantamount to suicide.
And:
Singleton working is not healthy for you....

Why? Are you sitting comfortable? Then I'll begin. (anyone over 30 should recognise that! )

We'll start with a song. Join in when you recognise it.

You put your engine in,
You take your engine out,
In, Out, In, Out,
Drop it on your finger and dance about,
Shout lots of expletives and dance some more
That's what it's all about!
Oooooooooo!
Do the engine swap out,
Oooooooooooooo!
Do the engine swap out,
Oooooooooooo!
Do the engine swap,
In, out, in, out, shake it all about.

Here is the result of forgetting to connect the shifter cable, then leaving a spanner on top of the transmission, then dropping the subframe on me finger when I couldn't reach the jack handle.

As I knelt there manfully enduring I hailed assistance that eventually sauntered over and digested that I was in trouble and suggested he was my best buddy and would look forward to the huge present he would shortly receive after lifting said subframe and engine of my digit.
Now I don't 'know' if its was his fantasy thoughts or my suggestion that if he didn't move quicker I would rip the digit off, gouge out his eyes and conduct an approximation of skull copulation that would leave him mildly shocked, that did it but he lifted the sodding thing off and I recovered my digit.

I also manage to rip out the front mount while I was doing this.....

I was getting slap dash with my engine removal. Fortunately I had a spare.

So by lunch time I was back where I was at 0800 when I started.

So to take my mind of my incompetence and discomfort I whipped the head of my duff engine.

Joy of joys, no major damage. Just some minor marks where the inlet valves impacted the piston. I will have to do a pumping volume check. But hopes are high.

The head as expected has all inlet valves bent.

and

So off to the machine shop with them for some new valves and guides.

I then moved onto the suspension and my real nightmares began.
Manage to wreck the locking bolt as I inserted it into the top of the hub carrier to lock up the 2 top control arms and now can't get it out!
Spent a couple of hours on that. Still there!

back to the engine and conected up all the electrics. At least this looks as though it is done, it is yet to be tested. So as I finished tonight it looked like thus....

Exactly as it did last night. O well...........

Disclaimer.

I am rapidly moving toward that point where any person living or dead is liable ................. period.

My finger is now completely black and significantly larger.
