S8 Solid Tappets Adjustment
I seem to remember both form articles when the S8 came out in 1997 and from the service book from my three previous 340bhp S8s that unlike the standard the 4.2 they had solid tappets that required adjustment at services. I now have a 360bhp model, but there is nothing in the service book about tappet adjustment. Am I imagining things. Did the tappets perhaps go hydraulic on the newer cars?

The ABZ and AHC had cam followers that were hydrolic. They did however come in varying thickness, I suspect so that wear could be overcome as hydrolics alone were not enough (could have just been build tollerances though).
The 40V motors don't! From what I can tell from the drawings the cam lobes seem to contact direct onto the valves........ And the 32V

Having just rebuilt both cylider heads on my S8 to cure various oil leaks, I thought I could shed a little more light on this subject.
Firsly the 40v motors are all hyraulic followers. The 32v motors like mine have hydraulic followers on the exhaust valves, and solid followers on the inlet valves. Underneath the solid followers, on top of the valves are lash caps. These come in various thicknesses, to allow valve clearance adjustment. Not the easiest things to adjust, and not recommended for the faint hearted!!!! Hope this helps you out. |

Thanks for the response. It does help because it confirms I don't need to get anything adjusted.
