Did the same lady happen to mention anything about friends and 10 or 12 cylinders at all?

The spirit world can kiss my proverbial. Spoke to the insurers of my A8, Direct line, and they have just quoted me silly money just to make the change to Darrens, christ knows what the renewal quote would be.

As a standard 2001 S8, his reg no. quoted, the change would cost me £50 admin, £109 extra for the remaining six months of my policy. With the brake mods add another six hundred quid to that. Including taxing it takes the cost of change to north of four grand for me, assuming mine sells for about 1200-1500. Not practical. I was tempted to borrow but that's god's way of telling you that you can't afford it.

I'm going to try some other insurers tomorrow and maybe even ring back mine because when I asked about adding the ebc disks to mine, not the crossdrilled admittedly, the underwriter came back with the OK and no premium change just thank you for informing us, let us know if you go ahead.

I just phoned Darren, and quite frankly want to crawl away and die from embarrasment because, as I'm sure you've noticed, I want his car and he wanted to sell to me and was great to deal with. To the point where i nearly put down a deposit last night and commited verbally to buy his car with but a few provisos, sight unseen. I'm a bit of ****, sorry but I've spent the last four years lecturing the wife about being bloody stupid with money so I can't start appearing to do the same the minute something shiny appears. I do get that it's one of the best and shouldn't go kerspalt and will therefore save me a fair bit in the first year or two of ownership, I was happy to buy it over the phone after all so by all means slag me off for backing out but please don't point out the fact that I'm potentially missing out on one of the nicest D2 s8s. I really know that and I'm a teensy bit gutted as well as feeling like a dishonorable twunt.

Sounds like its cheaper for Darren to 'unmod' the brakes, than it is for you to insure them !

I'm with Direct line, and they're generally quite good, but obviously in this case they're taking the pi55.

Cant fault the man math though Bill, if its going to cost that much to insure, then it probably is a stretch too far....

Bill!! Them brakes are just standard sized S8 brakes, they aren't a big brake kit upgrade or anything. You don't have to declare them any more then you would by getting discs from GSF rather then OEM Audi! Darren painted the callipers yellow, nothing else. Trust me on this one.

I's an honourable thing to get carried away with enthusiasm of owning any S8, never mind one of the quality of Darrens.

You have also hugely entertained with your fantastical storey about spiritual advice. What a great argument, but one that would never wash with my wife, she'd have me locked up

Do you have the option of insuring it on classic cover? May be worth exploring.
Also, have you thought about returning the parts that are (obvious) and causing the insurance hike. Its not like these 8's are slow in their standard kit

Lastly. I can't agree more about not borrowing. Rather than feeding the usurers with your hard earned sweat and tears, wait a bit and the right car at the right price will fall into your lap. They are not going up in price

Thanks for the laff and good luck

Bit of a bu&&er Bill, Direct Line are not great at dealing with "non standard" stuff though, when I got my S8 I had zero no claim and started off looking at quotes of around £3k from some, which was going to put the car out of my reach. However a bit of site comparison work did throw up some interesting stuff, ended up with Admiral, not sure what they would be like in a claim and they charge you for any subsequent changes like different reg plate for instance, but ended up with an affordable quote well under a grand. Also I am older than Adam so that helps in my case too. I am sure if you shop around you will get something affordable, good luck

Bill, are the brakes currently on your A8 from Audi, If not have you declared them to your insurance company? Its the exact same thing with these EBC discs and pads. You don't have to declare them to your insurance company. I am having my BMW remapped on the weekend. I spoke to my insurers (Budget underwritten by Aviva) and they said no extra charge, just let them know once done. Result. May want to try them?

Brakes - Yes I know they are the standard size, I went through the process of checking with the underwriters at direct line when I wanted to change mine.

I wasn't going the pads and ducts route as well though and mine were front only so god knows. They are marketed as a performance part Amar.

Money - A thousand pounds is a lot of cash to me folks, that's the approximate difference in what I was going to spend buying a car and what I would have spent buying Darrens. That's after a great deal of creative accounting and flexibility on his part to make it happen. A few extra hundred on the insurance now and again in december/january is pushing it too far. Never mind the jokes I make about grief from my wife I have learnt the hard way to stick to my limits and my peace of mind depends on not having money worries.

I don't feel bad about this, interest is a mugs game.

I do however feel embarrassed, for blindingly obvious reasons.

Do I think mediums are real? Of course not. Full of the proverbial but it makes for a funny tale and was timely. She did surprise me with that one and it makes a funny tale but there at least four different directions that info could have come from in the real world just off the top of my head. Any way, if she'd been talking to my gran then there would have been stuff mentioned and lots more swearing, lots.

As I once said to an angry wiccan "you bring your spells and a skirt and I'll bring a bat". The wife believes it, fair enough, I'd like to but show me some data and what you're hiding behind that mirror first eh?

Bill
