Anely and I are still planning to come, dates dependent.

We hadn't booked the hotel yet as we half expected this to happen.

So, if anyone has trouble getting room cancelled without losing money, presumably the hotel will allow a 'transfer' to another guest?

Manuel
The Hotel is now closed for a few weeks (maybe longer). When we last spoke to them they said existing bookings could be carried forward for 6 months. If you cancel your room (which can't be done till they reopen I guess) then you forfeit your deposit which I understand is £25. However the Hotel group were having a meeting to discuss the whole covid-19 issue the day after we saw them, but we are not aware of the outcome of that meeting yet. This applies to bookings made directly with the hotel but we understand some bookings were made via booking.com and as such these will be subject to their booking conditions

That is something we would need to clarify with the hotel Sarg..

Default Change of Dates- 30th/31st Oct

I have now contacted the hotel and, on based on the info/comments from those already booked, I have changed the dates to 30th/31st October. It is appreciated that the often fine autumn weather might have deteriorated by then but, as it is often said, there's no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothing (Perhaps winter wheels/tyres should be considered too.)
At the moment, the hotel is sticking to the line of their Ts and Cs that the deposit is non-refundable but, given the circumstances, they said that they may consider this issue. However, i cant honestly see this being agreed as like any other hospitality business they are looking into the abyss.
Keep well and keep in touch.

Just a thought for those that may have issues with the dates and ask to cancel, your travel insurance will probably cover any losses.

True, though I'd imagine the excesses on most travel policies will probably exceed the deposits paid for most people. Not dumb, these insurers

I recall a recent travel program commenting on this and they said EXACTLY what our view (as crumblies) is on travel insurance.
"It's mainly to cover you for medical emergencies".

That is spot on, the cost of the trip is trivial compared to what you might need to spend to deal with a medical issue in another country.
That's why, when you're young, travel insurance is so cheap.
And if it's a UK trip and you're a UK resident, to qualify for a claim can be quite difficult. 2 days away probably isn't enough.

We had a very (no, extremely) expensive trip around the Scottish islands booked, starting on Monday, and see no prospect of claiming anything given all the constraints/rules etc.
The really sad thing is that our 45th wedding anniversary is on Easter Sunday and that was scheduled to be celebrated on the remote island of Iona joining in a service at the Abbey.
(And it's my birthday on the Saturday too)

I've always been a bit silly and paid the lot when I book.
If this year goes wrong it will teach me.

I am somewhat aghast that the hotel would, for even one moment, consider not refunding those deposits made by people who are unable to use them for the booking later in the year.
