My first 4.2 Tdi was the cheaper tax bracket pre March 2006, so they do exist. I guess its just irritating that simply because a car is slightly newer, you pay extra tax for absolutely nothing in return.....

I'd never really thought it through that way before but I think you have un-earthed my inner logic in my neurotic avoidance of the £500 tax disc - three cars, three motorbikes is a cumulative effect! Yes I could SORN, but it's a PITA and defeats the point of owning them, I'm not a collector, just an occasional user of some of my toys!

My D3 4.2 TDI was registered 01 Nov 2005 - still on the forum, great car

I had this issue also, so I waited for the D4 where the 4.2 TDI is comfortably not in the higher tax bracket! Even the recent S8's avoid that

That said if I was running a single car daily, I agree that £20 a month in "extra" VED isn't the end of the world - Good luck with your sale

I'm impressed they do exist. As I say I've not seen one so I guess they're the sort of thing that people keep hold of and get snapped up quickly as they become available.

It's clear that in recent years the motoring industry has made a real focused drive towards efficiency and driving down emissions, partly in response to taxation.

I dont find it surprising that even the higher performance models are in the lower emissions bands these days. It does also make me wonder if that's now why the government have changed vehicle taxation again, so there is now a first year's payment related to emissions followed by a flat rate. I doubt they'd do it if it didn't make them more money now vehicles generally are getting cleaner!
