Personally, I'm not really concerned about any of my automobile being stolen. I hope it doesn't happen, but if it does, insurance will take care of things.

I kind of feel I've got too many things to worry about, without adding an automobile. The moment I begin stress too much over what may, or may not happen, that's the day I cease to be a free man, and become a slave to a hunk or metal on wheels.

I've got a buddy, he's got a 2009 R8, which he's pretty paranoid about. If he's driving home from work, and he notices a car behind him, that's been behind him for a while, he actually drives past his house, round several roundabouts, taking the long, scenic route, in case the car behind has car jackers on board. He won't let his wife drive it, he won't let his kids touch it, he gets real mad if a car's half a car's length behind him in traffic. He once got out of the car and picked a fight with a trucker, because he felt the truck was too close to the R8. (It wasn't). I just sat in the car and cringed.

Way too much paranoia, at that rate he'll have a stroke before he's 45.

Wow, that is kinda taking the fun out of it....

If I had an R8, I would have bucket loads of paranoia, but thats becaue I cant afford to buy one, run one or be robbed of one so owning one would be a bit dumb for me.

I sold the RS6 mainly due to the fear of someone targetting it.

The cost of the car is covered on insurance, the trauma of having strangers break into the house, threatening the safety and security of my family.... Just not worth it.

I'd rather have a slightly less flash car, and not invite trouble.

I agree, Ian. My family's safety is paramount. If I was ever asked for my keys in the dead of night, I would gladly hand them over, no question, without waiting to see if they're armed.

I just don't think any car, regardless of how exotic and expensive is worth the stress.

Kevlar layers, or blankets can be adapted to just about any vehicle, if you have the money. A steel, welded up armor job is very heavy, cuts into door openings, and changes the vehicle dynamics quite a bit. (Figure your 4000lb car will be more like 6000lbs, and you lose 2 to 3 inches around every door opening, while your windows become fixed in place, and the doors gain 300lbs each.)

The kevlar setup hangs blankets in the doors, floor jute or pad is replaced with a floor blanket, and the headliner is augmented with another blanket.

Windows again are fixed in place, and thicker bullet resistant ones installed.

I'd go with the W12 over the S8, as it has more tourqe, and you'd want all you could get with the heavy armor laden vehicle.

As for simple mods that anyone can add to the car, many years ago, a good friend of mine who lives in New Mexico where they have a serious car theft problem did this easy fix.

He was into music, so on his car key ring, he had a quick detach ring, with a large size stero plug on it. The contacts on the plug were soldered to complete the circuit, and he wired his fuel pump relay power into a female stereo plug placed somewhere easy to reach, but not easy to see or find/figure out...

Unless the shorted out stereo plug was in the socket, the fuel pump was never going to work, thus the car would not go anywhere with a common thief. (Sure, you could tow it away, but most thefts in New Mexico, end up in Mexico... and they are not towed there.! )

Cheap, but he did say if you forgot to plug in, and did it when the power was on, it would arc, and burned up the contacts. (Key is plug in before you crank over the power!)

Just a thought, but I've also seen "factory" switches for items that don't exist on the car used in the same way. Get creative, and keep your car where you want, not off with some thief.

It would have been easier to take the fuel pump fuse out

Default Paranoia

It isn't easy stopping paranoia...early last year some thieves stole my old 535i from the front in the late afternoon...my wife has just come home and was playing with my son in the back room and the thieves crept in through the front door...grabbed the keys from the front door and ran....i couldn't believe it happened as the s4 was also parked on the drive and keys were only a couple of yards away from the BMW keys...the BMW was probably worth less than a grand at the time...

After that I would never leave the s4 keys at home...and many times would wake in the nite to check for noises...now it's gone I don't worry so much but it is still there at the back of mind...it's the not knowing who it is that makes it worse...cos you can't actually do anything about it...
