Default Slippery little suckers

Having read how Conan had some issues fitting the engine and ended up with the sub frame resting on hi finger, and numerous other incidents ver the years with A8's collapsing their standard jack this week it was my turn.

I have been meaning to get the wheels refurbished for ages and this week in preparation for the meet decided to finally get it sorted. Of course the main problem with that is you need all the wheels in one go and the car cant be moved for a week or so unil the wheels are back. The best place for it was my garage, its a tight fit at the best of times without having to remove wheels as well so I got the spare wheel from the track car and put it onto the NSF wheel and then drove the car into the garage at an angle to give myself as much room as possible. I continued on removing the OSF wheel but as is iften the case the trolley jack I had at home didnt want to go high enough to put the axle stand where i wanted it so i had to comprimise a bit and used the anti roll bar subframe mount. That was fine so onto the OSR, no poblem there got the axle stand in easy enough and onto the NSR. As some of you will have noticed the A8's are very strong and you will quite often see the car raise a wheel when jacking at a different point so it wasnt too much of a surprise to notice that the car had lifted off the OSR axle stand when i jacked up the NSR. Well just as everything was looking rosey and the tyre was lifting off the ground the whole car moved and fel off the front axle stand.

Ooooops

luckily the axle stand had tipped over but had still stopped the disc hitting the floor. I went into work and picked up the 18"sport wheel that I still have and refitted that and managed to still get the jack into so that I could lift the car and fix and reposition the poor axle stand.

Alls good now it wasn't a big problem, I'm fairly lucky that i was clear of the car at the time and although I had thought I had done everything right a new better quality jack may have to be added to the list of wants and ill think more about positioning the axle stand so that the tripod aspect is better placed from now onwards.

Oh well we live and learn

Good to hear your not hurt and neither is the 8!
Lessons for us all here. A good jack is a must.

If you have the clearance and a decent trolley jack I have found (I had the bumper off) that using a wooden pad piece I could lift the whole of the front from under the subframe. Don't put the jack straight on the subframe the box section will crush. Use a wooden pad piece to spread the load a bit 9" x 12" is big enough. But the bigger the better.

Lesson 1: A good trolley jack is a must.

My Lesson 2: Never trust that your friend has a clue about where to put axle stands before you get under their car.

Lesson 3: Cross your fingers when promising not to anally insert the jack handle when you get out of there.

Lesson 4: Concerned neighbours will phone the police after your friend has been trapped in his shed for half an hour by a bar wielding maniac.

Glad you survived unscathed...

Sadly, a guy 2 doors down from me wasn't as lucky last year

He was jacking up his car to swop wheels front to back, and had one side in the air when it rolled forward off the jack and crushed his hand...

He was trapped for a good few minutes till we found another jack to lift the car up and get him out. He had gloves on, but lots of blood seeping through them.

He didn't lose fingers, but they'll never be the same again...

Sad tale I know, but dont underestimate the weight of these cars, or the value of limbs - A good trolley jack and some axle stands will look real cheap when you're lying there in A&E... !

had a similar thing happen to me many years ago with a mundano on the old y-jack.. As I was putting the spare on, it slipped away and the brake drum landed on the rim. If I didn't have a wedding ring on, my hand would have been stuck in between the tyre and the wheel arch, managed to get it out with a minor loss of skin..

Never trusted the damn things again after that.

As I said I thought I was doing everything right I was using the trolley jack and the axle stands but I guess you can never be too cautious.
