Is there a short panel about 4-5" high on some cars?
There are 3 small slots in the boot trim vertically either side of the void which would suggest something should be there

Most, not some, have that small panel.
If you want one, I have one.......

They are available in some places but at ~EUR150 almost 3 times as much what I paid for mine.

Spotted this "bulgy" one in the USA: http://www.ebay.com/itm/381592016055 Seems cheap enough.

This is what it looks like, though maybe less messy! I actually get a 2-gallon (empty) metal petrol can in there, and still do behind the full panel.

Bought the one with bulge from A8parts in 2013 or so.

All cars with 110ah battery will be with this bulge since 110ah battery sits higher in a more shallower, but longer battery tray.
I have actually upgraded my car to 110ah battery and changed the battery tray as well. There is a thread on this forum.

When you will find the door cover with bulge you will also need part number 4D0868865GV40, which is essentially part of carpet reinforced with plastic that holds cover at the bottom.

Some pictures not from my car that shows the part:

The small panel uses two slots at each end/side.
Slight thread hijack, but here (mainly for Ameiseuk) are some pictures of mine, including a selection of the types of screw I have used in the past (on my PF S8) to replace missing lugs.

I realize this thread is quite old now, but the photo in the original post is of my car. I'm in the USA. As far as I know, all the battery doors on cars sold here have the lower bulge. As such, any you find on American eBay will be of this design.

I think it was Sergey who bought it in 2013. I have one too, but I think I bought it from Sergey - but I'd swap for a flat one
