Worth upgrading RNS-D from a 2003 disc?
My "new" S8 appears to have RNS-D with a 2003 DX disc in it.
It worked fine trundling back from Essex today in the snow. Is it worth getting a new disc and if so will only an original full-price one work properly or are there upgrade or backup options at a more sensible price? Are any of those on eBay likely to be worth buying and if so what elements of the specification are vital?

Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.). 2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation".  (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!  Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course.  (internal dimming mirror added later)1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Any travel pilot DX disc should be just fine. Over the years I have seen probably more non-original Navigation discs in Audi cars than genuine ones, and they generally seem to work ok.
Ebay is a good source of discs, 2nd hand genuine and otherwise if the full 3 figure retail price is a bit much to handle

Try this guy. These are "back"-up disks for 2012, and you can make an offer - he seems to accept £25 . Brian Jim and I all needed "back-up" discs and they work fine - so far. At least we can all drive the new M74 without being told we're meandering through the Gorbals and some of the mean streets of east Glasgow....

I have a friend, er, we'll call him Fred, and Fred looked into some of this some time ago.
Fred found that the Dx discs from teleatlas at least were mainly protected by safedisc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SafeDisc) using a mix of V2 and V3. It doesnt make them difficult to copy DIY. Fred did have some success but has slept since, but it involved specialist ripping tools to rip it like a safedisc V2, and then burn it back as a V3 or something. Fred is vague, sorry about that. It wasnt straight forward, especially for the later discs. Earlier ones were easy in comparison. He does recall that very high quality media and a very slow burn was required, and only 1 particular burner he had worked, none of the rest were successful. Fred had some success but in reality it was a lot of effort when there are working versions available for minimal cost at zero effort....
