Worth upgrading RNS-D from a 2003 disc?

Exactly.
I guess they've "improved" the disc anti-copying security over the years, the 2003 ones are trivial to copy.
It's interesting that inserting a different CD results in a software install from the CD itself - I guess that includes the self-checking software.

For anyone wanting an up to date 2012-13 DX nav map I can point you to places where it can be downloaded FOC.

Apparently to get the disc to burn correctly you are advised to download CloneCD (there's a freeware trial version but you need version 5.3.0.1 apparently)

Set the reading speed to minimum (no idea why as you're not reading a disc!) and under read errors set to 'do not report read errors' which presumably stops the writing from failing if it hits some copy protection.

Once I've finished creating an RNS-E disc for myself I'll have a go at this and see if I can make a disc for someone to try.

My RNS-D disc turned up this morning from the first sellers link. This disc also reports incompatible, however I think the issue is with the RNS-D in my car since it also had issues reading the original disc when I put that back in. I am going to track down a CD lens cleaner and try that.

Adrian, I have the disk image and CloneCD but have never made a working copy despite following the instructions from a certain website. They all report incompatible when inserted, but perhaps its the dirty lens in my RNS-D.

I had a refund from my seller, so back to square one for now (2003).

I also have a 2007 (final) non-DX disc and I'm sure I read somewhere on here that these "should" work in an RNS-D.
Tried it and it doesn't - comes up as incompatible.

Does anyone know if there's any little trick to this or are non-DX discs totally incompatible with RNS-D?

Come to think of it, what does DX mean (and do for you) anyway?

I've seen non-dx discs in DX units before now. They just worked. I recall quite vividly as I didnt expect them to work, but on reflection it made sense.

There is just less map detail etc, it seems a bit incomplete compared to the DX discs.

I dont know technically what the 'DX' means....

In my line of work, it's short for 'diagnostics'. But I have no idea how that might translate to a sat nav disc

its proberbly german initials for something. IIRC the non DX discs are lacking details such as POIs. Still not got around to seeing if a lens cleaner will work, I am hopeful though given the problem I had getting the original non copied disc to be recognised.

Try burning a copy with software called Alcohol 120% which is free - under 'options' on the left hand side is one called 'emulation', then click 'extra emulation'. It then gives you an option to do 'bad sectors emulation' for safedisc/safedisc2.

Im very interested in finding a newer disc than the one thats in the car.

I ran short of time producing a wide range of discs for HP to test -
Got half a dozen done but there are a number of other options to try. Will post here when I sort it out whether it works or not
