Default New key

Morning all

One of my keys has gone through the wash and now doesn’t work. I’ve opened it up and spotted some rust around the batteries and some white misting on the circuit board. Might be time for a new key. Is this relatively simple or am I going to have to ask a dealer to do a new key for me at a cost of remortgaging my house?

First thing to do is thoroughly and carefully clean up and dry the inside of the failed key and try with fresh batteries.
Secondly, there are regular mentions here of specialist(s) who can supply new keys for D2s, often in more "interesting" designs. Neil has used someone regularly and I think even arranged for them to attend owners meets. A search might find some references.

Hopefully he'll spot this and give his recommendations, as will others. But a dealer trip is not really needed and the technology might even be too old for them!

IIRC VCDS can cope with all the key matching/coding required for authentication, though specialists will have their own tools to do the job.

I think the immobilizer part should still be working as the chip is sealed and there are no batteries for it and you will only need remote fob part and remote can be paired to car by yourself as long as you have the second key. Remotes are about £100 from dealer, new aftermarket or used genuine Audi are around £15-20

Good point ainars, I'd forgotten that. Is it simple to identify the chip and move it to a new key? I've swapped batteries but never looked at the other bits inside.

I now recall doing similar things with my old Ford Focus which had the same generation technology and pairing remotes was really simple if the immobiliser was already valid. Though in that the immobiliser chip was very obvious, separate and easily moved to a new key. Ford used 2 different but compatible versions; earlier ones were in a sort of tiny glass phial which "could" break but later ones were solidly embedded in plastic.

Definitely worth trying to start the car with the damaged key though, you can probably unlock the door with the blade.
Alarm might go off but should stop once the car is started, or unlock with the working remote on a first test?

The D2 chip is the glass one and can't be moved to another key as it is epoxied in place. Coding a new key from scratch requires the immobiliser pin which is non-trivial to get. Audi just plug it in to the mothership and it happens automagically, but aftermarket tools are available to extract it. VCDS can't code it without the pin.

I can't remember the company name of Neil's locksmith either, but he did keys for a few of us at the 2018 meet.

Coding in a new remote is very simple, all described in the Ross-Tech wiki. Though there's a finite number (5 maybe?) so you can run out.
I think I did it when I got my current S8, erased all the remotes (requires VCDS) then just added the two I had.

Certainly looks like it.

I had my key handy so popped it apart, leaving the remote part away from the car.
Unlocked the drivers door with the blade, alarm didn't go off. Inserted key and started car. Result.
Try that, I think you probably have a cheap and simple solution as suggested by Ainars, if cleaning doesn't work.
