I don't know David how it is on D2s, but on D3 it is either the correct way or upside down

She had a a good wash today in and out and seats balmed...yes, again

So I thought I will share some interior photos to show the minimum wear in my opinion on a 10 year old car with fair miles.
Carbon trim has been well looked after with no fine scratches, leather on the doors and centre console has no wear either..but I put two coats of balm anyway and everywhere

Door cards are great apart a small wear from shoes (getting out) at the bottom on the driver side and few scratches on the metal speaker's mesh which drives my OCD mad a little so that will end up being changed again at some point for sure.

Here she is waiting with her sibling in the queue for a ritual Saturday wash

and all back and shiny again

Default S8 Project

Fantastic write-up...!

I have had a low mileage S8 for 3 years now and like the car very much.

I have replaced the intake manifold complete...(£3000 in UK....£1000 from US...I think they are made there) Problem for me was loud ticking at 2000 revs, thought broken flaps but discovered only a slack linkage between the two banks.

Only other problem has been one of the front air structs.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind....

Is your power steering pump noisy...that is does it whine a bit? Mine always whines but displays no other issue.
and the second question, do you get any creak from behind dash when going over a speed bump and outside temperature is very cold. This second question I have researched but every angle points to a suspension issue....which it isn't. Stranger is that if I start the car without driving it, just allowing it to reach temperature, it's silent....as it is in the summer. Just wondered if you have either of these issues too.

Regards

David

I think you'll find this is likely to be top mounts, I've had this on my S4s before and its all on account of the heavy front engine over the struts (which is why the rear doesnt creak) - I had my first S4 taken apart to find the issue and its just where the rubber gets so cold in winter, as soon as it starts moving and heat radiates through the front of the car it disappeared.

It sounds even worse if you have polybushes as I have the same issue but much more amplified with the Track TT, its almost deafening but does go away. Sounds like a loud wet creaking if you will, like something from a boat

Funny you mentioned both issues as I am currently dealing with the power steering issue and creaking noise is exactly same as on your car.
This was happening on the A8 I've just recently sold and is happening on S8 as well...but...only in cold temperatures as you both guys said. It drives me nuts.

1781cc, do you think fitting new rubbers on top of the mount could solve this issue which is possibly caused by the age and wear??

When my upper arms were on the way out I've had almost identical issue, but it was getting worst and worst with the temperature rising.

My steering pump started making noise recently and because of the reservoir location you can't just undo the cap and check the level on regular basis, I've decided last weekend to remove top art of the air box and ducting to check the fluid level.
And yeah, my fluid level was below minimum so that got my attention straight away.
After removing the passenger side fog light grill I have noticed that both hoses by the intercooler have a slight leak pass the hose clips. One is from the bottom of the reservoir to the intercooler and second one from the steering rack to the intercooler.
10min ago I finished talking to my mate who has an Audi garage and RS4s have almost identical layout for the power steering system and they suffer from the same issue. This can be very quickly solved as it has been tested on many cars already by putting another (second) clip on each hose. Or replacing the hose with new clips but if the hoses are ok then its a bit of a pointless job.
What my plan of action is for tomorrow, I'm waiting for the steering fluid to arrive, I'll be fitting an extra hose clip on each hose, clean it all with brake cleaner, topping up the fluid to max and observe and listen for the noise to go away.

The creaking in cold weather will be the front anti roll bar. Part is about £120 on the A8

I'd say probably not, I replaced the top mounts on my first S4 in order to solve it, but it didn't, its to do with the hardening of the rubber I believe, but I'm no expert, only what I experienced is what I can comment on.

The Track car has super pro racing top mounts (polyurethane) and they squeak like mad, I think its a weight thing combined with temperature. If the issue was something age related I think it wouldn't go away in summer or when the temperature moves up

EDIT: Just seen Conquistador's post - maybe thats why mine didn't disappear with new top mounts. Although that said, the TT has recently had an R32 roll bar fitted and still squeaks so maybe its a bit of both?

Here are the pics.
It's the hose behind which leaks the most and fluid runs down the hose where it drips onto the the engine under tray.
Fluid colour is nice and clear so I will be only topping it up.
