Default HELP,2005 D3 4.2 TDI smoke after parking up??

I'm on holiday currently so would realy appreciate some quick replies!!

Drove down here no problem, in fact to drive its perfectly fine...

Just nipped out to do a shop...parked up at the supermarket and noticed a smell...

Got out and and theres smoke comming from the front drives side under engine behind front wheel...pulled out the drivers floor mat to kneel down on and notice theres a PIPE looks aluminium pertruding throught the engine tray.

Smoke was comming from that...I remember it from when I did the oil change few weeks ago....when I removed the engine tray I had to line it back up..and at the time wondered what the hell it was for....
We have had bad snow and although I alway raise the suspension to high in some places it was high in middle and so snow would be hitting the car...but i'd expect any to have melted due to heat of engine...
I checked the oil level and topped up as half way between low and high drive back to our 2nd home and parked up and rechecked for smoke...nothing??

So what is this pipe for? Its defo not air con...bit worried so need some reasurances please....

Rossy

If you post picture with the pipe in question it would help.

Pre-heater, if fitted. Warms the interior up on a timer you can set. Uses your diesel fuel to run. If you've filled up with really cheap and nasty fuel it can smoke a bit - I've seen a Voyager with its aux heater running after filling up at Tesco and it looked like the car was on fire! Enough that I mentioned it to the driver....

Yes, it is supplementary heater. It is normal for a whisp of smoke to come out when the engine is on or for 10 seconds after turning it off. If you didn't turn it on manually or on a timer and the car was parked then it sounds like it's stuck on.
Here is an example of a faulty one...

I got smoke coming from same location sometimes when I do a cold start. It smells really bad. Is it likely to be this or something else?

.

My smoke smelt very bad when I first noticed it. Is this normal?

How does one actually set the timer for the aux heater?

On the climate control panel, press setup and scroll down near the bottom it says:
Aux vent>
Aux heater>ON/OFF/T1/T2/T3
or something like that and you can set three timers date and time.

If it is missing, you probably just have the supplentary heater, which only runs when the engine is running, and cold and cold weather and fuel is over 1/4. You can activate it with VCDS or hidden menu, but all it will do is overheat and cutout as the electric coolant pump is not fitted.
