I was thinking more does it make a difference which model the RNS-E comes from; i.e. does an A6 one fit better than A4 one or are they one and the same? I recall seeing on this forum that some whittling is required to get a snug fit - or was that for the MMI..?

Bearing in mind I still haven't got the car yet (pick it up tomorrow hopefully) all this is speculative, but at least I'll have time to save the pennies in the meantime.

For the perfectionist, the A6 one fits slightly better than the A4 one, but we're talking sub millimeter gaps here.

They both need cutting down to size, neither will drop straight in....

Can't be bothered (at present) with an RNS-E upgrade, so it's the only realistic option.

I've bought it and it all works, but I've only done a "lash-up" so far, I'm waiting for better weather before tackling it.
Having removed the transmission tunnel covers (drains!) I've left those off for now to help with cabling/access behind the RNS and am having a rethink.
I've also got an Xcarlink unit which was in the glovebox (temporarily removed), but I'm rethinking the whole arrangement now I've got both that and the TV adapter to connect.

The slot in the drivers knee panel is probably going to be used instead (or as well) as the glovebox; just not sure exactly how.
And being even more radical, I've already dropped the CD changer below the boot floor and could even fit the Xcarlink in there, though that makes the Bluetooth add-on a bit tricky.

There are some interesting threads about model of RNS-E to choose for D2, especially after introduction of post-2010 models.

After all that, it turn's out the S8 I bought doesn't have a TV tuner. If it did, would it be located next to the CD changer?

I suppose it's irrelevant as it wouldn't have worked but still, I thought they all came with it. Obviously not.

The RNS-E upgrade is looking more and more likely now.

Mine doesn't have it either. It's an option.

If there it's on a big bracket with the CD changer and you'll have the "bulging" cover.

Nope, no bulges here...

No Bose either which is a shame. I have it in my A4 Quattro and it's one of the better sound systems I've heard in a car. A TV I won't miss; a sub-woofer I will.

Slowly getting there - other priorities at present....
The video interface box will be tied to a strut behind the drivers side transmission tunnel trim, pretty much alongside the RNS-D.

The XCarlink and DVB-T boxes will go in the drivers knee cubby - see attached photo, currently off the car.
The XCarlink clips into a supplied bracket which neatly fits on the left side, giving access to the SD card slot (and USB if needed).
The tuner I've mounted on a stiff black plastic ledge made from a DVD case!
The ledge is secured into the cubby with black Velcro, as is the tuner onto the ledge.

Plenty of wires to arrange tidily and connect; refitting this panel will need care and it also has the diagnostics port to replace below!

The digital tuner will work with existing rear window antennas too.

This upgrade path won't require changing the cable between the head unit and the TV tuner in the boot. That means we don't need to snake new harness to the boot from the head unit.

TV Tuner side connection is exactly the same and RNS-D side connection just need new 32-pin connector soldered instead of existing 11-pin connector. All required wires can be found in existing RNS-D 11-pin connector.

Below is mapping of pins from existing RNS-D side 11-pin connector to new 32-pin RNS-E connector:

PIN 1 - Audio earth - to PIN 28 of RNS-E
PIN 2 - Audio input (left-side) - to PIN 29 of RNS-E
PIN 3 - Audio input (right-side) - to PIN 13 of RNS-E
PIN 4 - Video input sync. - to PIN 15 of RNS-E
PIN 5 - Video earth - to PIN 30 of RNS-E
PIN 6 - PAL/NTSC (NOT USED, NO WIRE IN HARNESS)
PIN 7 - V-switch (NOT USED, NO WIRE IN HARNESS)
PIN 8 - Video input (blue) - to PIN 31 of RNS-E
PIN 9 - Video input (green) - to PIN 16 of RNS-E
PIN 10 - Video input (red) - to PIN 32 of RNS-E
PIN 11 - Screened earth - to PIN 14 of RNS-E
I've got the Hybrid TV Unit. From the above it looks like I'll need to get a new 32 pin connector, which is easy enough. From what I can see here

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7267

the RNS-D wiring into the type 2 TV module consists of a 32 pin and a blank 11 pin connector. Where is the 11 pin connector referred to above and why is a new 32 pin connector required?

Also, can anyone suggest the best place to buy the RCA accessory cable for my camera like the one shown on that post (the link on that page is out of date now)? The similar leads I see on ebay look the same but do not specifically say they support the 8J0919148B TV unit. They maybe OK though!

32 pin connector will be needed on RNS-E side of the cable that connects TV tuner and RNS-E. It will be needed because your existing RNS-D has got 11-pin connector and RNS-E is different. Audi made the 11-pin connector obsolete and created new 32 pin connector on RNS-E. Because there is no commercially available adaptor from 11-pin connector to 32-pin connector (at least I haven't found one) you will have to remove 11 pin connector and solder the new 32 pin connector according to pinout I provided. But because your car can be different always check ELSA wiring diagrams before doing anything. You may find an adaptor to avoid soldering -- perhaps someone else can suggest.

On another side of of the TV tuner cable we have connector that will fit the new TV tuner. You only need to add a third row or pins with RCA connectors like this (I haven't found UK supplier, but I'm sure they exist):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Video-DVD-...-/201045058432

You will need to change two fakra antenna connector housings when you install RNS-E hybrid tuner, part number 4E0 035 672 K.
