Default Claying

Claying has always been one my least favourite jobs, my 8 was the first car I clayed and it took forever, spent far too long on my hands & knees, and it gets expensive when you drop it too!

So, have just ordered one of these to give it a try, will report back after the first effort.

Farecla G3 Body Prep Clay Mitt

I used Halfrauds 3 for 2 offer to get some Autoglym leather conditioner and a new wool wash mitt too.

That'll be great if it does what it says on the tin.

I'm fitting my new mirror caps at the minute and my 20" wheels are in for a refurb. Car booked into the paint shop for a couple of bits to be spruced up as well. And then it'll be detailed. Plus the interior with Woolies stuff.

You'd think there was a meet coming up!

Funnily enough, mine's booked in for the rear bumper (thanks Mr uninsured driver!) at the end of May.

It was my paint guy that told me about clay mitts, said if I prepped it before going in he'd mop the whole car for £120 (3 hours labour).

Does that sound reasonable to anyone, seems a lot to me?

Depends how good a job he can do in 3 hours - factory Audi paint from this era is as hard as nails so you generally have to start quite abrasive and then go lighter so much more labour involved. If he's going to guarantee you a swirl free finish in 3 hrs then it's a bargain IMHO. I'd bet you'll probably still be able to see areas needing improvement

£150 for the day from the guy who does mine (very well…)

One of the reviews of the mitt is from someone who had experience of using bars before (most were new to claying) and he states he wouldnt return to clay bars which is a pretty positive endorsement i would say. And its not expensive.

If he knows what he's doing then I would say it's an ok price, Stephens price is more of a bargain! The guy that detailed my car twice spent about 7 hours just on the paintwork the first time when he was doing correction work and he didn't stop, but I would recommend that he checks the paint depth with a depth gauge before he gets too stuck in

I would expect a full correction detail to take 2 days, I am just asking him to give it a once over with a machine polisher, as I don't own one, with me doing all the prep work, i.e. the wash & decontamination. There is no detailing as such, no interior work, no cleaning under bonnet or door catches etc, just the polish.

And yes, he will be using a paint depth gauge before he does anything, it's been discussed.

I don't mind claying, I just hate the bit when you drop it or when its in the winter and your hands freezes trying to clay the car.
