Mirror Fire!
So there I am last night in the garage tinkering.. not with the car but with fitting it into the garage better. Anyway having driven out, moved some stuff and then driven back in I swear I can smell that melting / burning plastic smell and am thinking bloody hell, what under the bonnet is melting now.. maybe I have had the car idling around too long. etc.
Nope - glance right just in time to see the drivers mirror eject some small flames and loads of smoke!! - it seems the PCB grid-backing of the mirror for auto dim (I assume as there were 2 sets of wires attached to it) has given up, shorted and set about torching the car! Luckily I had a screwdriver handy and got the mirror out and extinguished the small fire before the mirror pod melted! Un clear mobile pics attached..! Well, your signiture does say 'heated all round' - I never realised you meant so literally....
On a slightly more sensible note, first time I've ever seen that happen....

Oddest thing I have seen. The surface of the mirror seems to have some liquid over it, how it auto-dims no doubt, and that was boiling in the bottom right corner of the mirror!!
I was worried I was about to loose the car.. garage.. house.. neighbour for a minute.. DEFINATELY going to get a car extinguisher now!! Was waiting for that mirror to go all fuzzy like the nearside one I already replaced, but guess I will be replacing it sooner now! |

Further to this.. I now don't have any mirror adjustment working. When I look up the fuse it appears (in the book) to be on the same as mirror folding and a couple other things that work fine.. just the mirror adjust both sides has stoped working.
Think something else is fried or have I not found the right fuse? |

In my experience, our fuses dont seem to be very well documented. Maybe its because we have right hand drive and a different loom, so they just didnt bother
I'd definitely check all the fuses in the drivers footwell for a starters....

weirdly.. and I kid you not, I haven't checked any fuses... I noticed the nearside autodip in reverse working again the other day.. and thought.. thats odd, since the mirror adjust doesn't work.
Tried the adjust pad to prove myself right and what do ya know.. the mirror adjust works fine again. Go figure. Haunted this car.. I swear |
