I hope so! It's served us well and although we paid £14.5k for it when you compare it to a new car we've not lost that much. Must get some interior pics as the full leather is nice to have on these

Hope its not too cheeky to post this here...Car is now back up for sale. I purchased this from Adrian on behalf of my parents who were looking for an old school design spacious estate.

Sadly after after less than 8000 miles in 2.5 years it would appear the gearbox is on the way out. As my parents are both shortly to give up driving on health grounds and I have no interest in the car or space or inclination to fix/break it...it has to go.

During their ownership it was serviced at 72752 miles in Dec. 2015 at which time the cam belt was also done. Service indicator currently shows a service needed and the MOT runs out in March. Advisories on the last one were corroded anti-roll bar and tyre wear on near side rear. Current mileage is 75724.

The car drives very nicely 95-98% of the time but on first start...usually in the morning or when cold, reverse gear does not engage properly and the gear select panel on the dash goes red and the car into limp mode (?) Turn the ignition off and on and its fine. The indy who services the car plugged it in and say its a 1320.00 fix including parts and labour. I don't know if thats correct or even a fair price. The old man doesn't like faults and won't drive the car as is, so it has to go.

Any clue as to value or suggestions as to possible fix would be appreciated. The car is pretty much as it was when it left Adrian's ownership but with a few more miles, gearbox issue and maybe some old folk wheel curbing...D'oh !!

That problem is almost certainly wear in the F125 switch, which has been much-discussed here recently and Adrian definitely knows all about.

No idea how difficult it is to replace on an A6 (or even if it's the same as on the A8) but if it's get-at-able you can probably open it up and clean up the electrical contacts inside and keep it going for a while.

As for it being a major problem, at the level described I've lived with for over 3 years, only just got it fixed last week.

e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

As above, depending on the nature of the stored faults it could be a very simple sensor fault or simply the gearbox oil needs topping up. If there's more than one stored fault and one relates to the range select switch (F125) then that's definitely the place to start.

I hope they've enjoyed it while they have been able to use it - was always a solid car for us that never let us down, bar a coil pack!

Thanks for the advice gents and yes Adrian, they very much enjoyed the car when using it. I'll maybe try to get a second opinion and see if there might be better news.

Do you have a nearby independent VAG specialist? Your best way forward is a scan with VCDS to get the exact code. It shouldn't be that much to change the F125 even at main dealer rates.

Default Looked this up on ELSAWIN

I've taken a screenshot from my ELSAWIN install for a 2004 Audi A6 Avant. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the thoughts and advice of 'the panel'. New F125 switch purchased and fitted which has cured the problem. The car now drives perfectly

Excellent news. Out of interest, how big a job (hours labour will do, not the bill) is that on an A6?
(It's a right royal PITA on a D2 A8/S8 though MJ here seems to be able to do it in less than 2 hours! )
