I had a feeling this would be fuel pressure all along , see what i was saying that the pumps can go for hours before failing .

So it is the main pump that sits in the tank that has failed ? its not some kind of electrical feed to the pump that is being lost .

Good thinking crossing in the other pump as a 'get you home ' method

It's definitely the main pump has failed. The feed to the pump is fine, the pump isn't completely dead but it can't pump enough pressure sporadically and especially if it gets hot. Then it cuts out at random.

The secondary pump is more than enough to run the car. So it is working just fine for now. The only down side is 1/4 of a tank is the new bottom of the tank.
