gas in fuel rail but plugs dry when it turns over ?

got to be not enough pressure whatever else might stop it starting

ergo MJ has to be correct ...take out the new pump and reseat the old one maybe...it worked , didn't it ?are you sure you fitted the VDO one with the extra pickup tube ?

Fuel at the rail - where are you measuring it?
You need to measure for flow on the low pressure return line after the pressure regulator.
Measuring it on the supply line is worthless.

Low pressure could be an indication of a split line - one of the rubber hoses on the fuel pump assembly (in tank) of mine was split and wouldn't pressurise the rail - kept me guessing for a couple of days that one!
