MMI light settings

Can anyone tell me what each of these background lighting settings are?



And for coming/leaving home lights, what is meant to happen when main beam and DRL's are set to on? Only my fogs light up when locking.

'Highway' - Illuminates LED strips in all 4 doors (best seen when it's totally dark)
'City' - Illuminates the front and rear overhead rectangle lights
'Cockpit' - Illuminates just the front overhead lights
'Rear' - Illuminates just the rear overhead lights
'Off' - Self explanatory really

The brightness of all the above can be adjusted


Exterior lighting:
'Coming home' - When you park up and turn the engine off, the fog lights and rear lights will come on as soon as you open the door to exit the car and for however long you select (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60 seconds). They turn off after that length of time when you lock the car
'Leaving home' - The fog lights come on when you unlock the car and are walking up to it. Will turn off as soon as you open the door to get in
'Main beam' - I believe when this is switched on the headlights come on for the 'coming home'/'leaving home' functions and not the fog lights. This is only available in cars with Auto lights and when the light switch is turned to Auto. If Auto lights aren't equipped then this function has no purpose at all
'Daytime running lights' - Simply switches the front LED DRLs on or off

Thanks for that, very useful.

I assumed that about the headlights when locking/unlocking, but certainly mine dont come on and my lights are set to auto.

I should also point out that whatever background lighting mode is chosen (if any) it can be switched on and off by pressing the big button in the centre by the rear view mirror between the two map/spotlight buttons

If 'Off' is chosen then this button has no function.

I think city and highway also do the footwell lights coz i can see my feet at night too.

If your anything like me and don't read manuals you maybe surprised to learn that the roof lights are dimmable if you hold the button down, there is a button nearest the windscreen on roof panel that turns on and off ambient lighting, there is also a way to set the back roof lights brightness from the front button.

Can't remember how so might be best to get familiar with the manual.

also if you double click the centre button it toggles between front rear both and off each time

Same issue what Lyons. Went to pick up little one, stopped at Morrisons, petrol station (all evening time, dark) and when Main Beam is set to ON still only fog lights come on when locking/unlocking while lights switch was set to AUTO???

Will have to check manual at some point

Quote from my 2009 handbook (for 2010 MY car):

"Main beam headlights: When the light switch is set to AUTO, you must select Main beam ON in the MMI before you can switch on the main beam headlights."

That, to me, has nothing whatsoever to do with coming home or leaving home lights but sounds like it actually controls whether the bi-xenons will go onto main beam setting (stalk flash/main switch).

There is also a sub note in the previous section (stalk flasher/turn signal lever) that says:

"When the light switch is in the AUTO position, the main beam headlights can be used if this function has been activated in the MMI"

So I guess the test is, can you select main beam (blue light on in instrument cluster) when this is switched to OFF?
