Default My birthday present to me!

Last year I took my wife to New York for her Hmphertum birthday (she won't like it if I tell you her age! ) This year it's my 50h Birthday and when she asked me what I wanted to do for it, and I told her, she said I could do that on my own!

So; I am going to. I said I wanted to take the beast to the Ring and hurtle around it so I could get the tick in the box of the 40 things to do before you die type stuff.

Now I could do this alone or I could arrange a beano with some like minded people in their 8s and make a road trip of it.

Timing isn't critical I can go any time from July to end October and I think I would like to make it over a long weekend with at least one day at the ring.

I don't mind doing all the administration and seeing if I can get group discounts on ferry's, accommodation and runs around the ring etc.

I have mentioned this to Tony and Ian and Ian suggested that there is a big Motor show in Germany in early Autumn or maybe a visit to the Audi factory would be a good day out.

Anyway, I have this idea that of a line of 8s being videoed going under an autobahn bridge at over a ton would have a certain
je ne sais quoi.

Would anyone be interested in going?

Nice place, nearly died on the bike several times purely down to thinking one bit was left when it was right etc. Should one occasion have proven fatal my last words on this earth would have been "Lets off road!" ala Charlie Higson rather than the usual "oh sugar, oh sugar" etc. I am a cretin who only deserves a pram to drive
There are some excellent guesthouses nearby and the beer is well, rather good actually. Good choice of birthday pressie. Unless I get round to shagging my sisters in law and engineer a divorce I shall not be attending though. Harumph.

This is the info about the German motorshow:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankfurt_Motor_Show

This year:

2009: 63rd IAA Cars in Frankfurt/Main from Thursday 17 September - Sunday 27 September, 2009; Press days: 15 + 16 September 2009; Trade days: 17 + 18 September 2009.

It is quote: the worlds largest motorshow unquote and is makes ours look rather embarrasing really....

David and I will almost certainly be going to show, as we do every 2 years when its on. We'll be going irrespective, so if Mikes 'do' falls within the same dates then we're happy to tag along, partially or fully, but dont plan anything 'around us'...

September is good. But I would want a full day at the ring and the motor show looks like something not to miss. What dates would be best Ian?

We typically go Friday, do the show Saturday and return Sunday. Last time we extended it by one day to drive down to Ingolstadt to see the audi factory and museum, which I heartily recommend, but we dont have the luxury of time ourselves to attend. They built the A3/4/5 /TT on this site from memory.

Instead, we would more likely visit Neckarsulm, which is the 2nd largest Audi factory and is responsible for the big boys toys, Q7, A8, RS, R8 etc.

Last time we went, the ring was often open for public use from about 5pm to 7pm after the days main events, so it will need careful planning if you're hoping to get a whole day on it.

Neckarsulm is conveniently en route to the 'ring, and to Frankfurt, which is where the motorshow is held.....

The ring is open most saturday and sundays for the full day, there is an easy to use calendar http://bridgetogantry.com/index.php?...ents&Itemid=72

We wanted to include a full day on the ring but unfortunately it is closed for a race on saturday 29th August and whilst its open on Sunday 30th, we will be at Spa for the F1, so it only left the monday evening available to us.

Ian,
I calculated out that route last night and it would be my choice. Frankfurt, Neckarsulm and then the ring if it's open.
I'm guessing the Northerners would go from Hull to Rotterdam and us Southerners would go from Harwich to Hook of Holland. A Friday morning sailing looks favourite.

Thanks for that Matt. I wonder if I could go twice!

Looking at the calculator, There looks to be 2 options to maximise events and people.

Fri 18 Sep - Ferry travel to Franfurt
Sat 19 Sep - Motor Show (1 or 2 days)
Sun20 Or Mon 21 - Neckarsulm
Mon 21 or Tue 22 - Ring
Tue 22 or Wed 23 - Ferry Home

or

Fri 25 - Ferry travel to Frankfurt
Sat 26 Sep - Motor Show (2 days)
Mon 27 - Neckarsulm
Tue 28 - Ring
Wed 29 - Ferry Home

Anyone any suggestions or preferences?
