Not usually a fan of touchscreens in cars either. Yes they are versatile and powerful but as well as being a pain to keep clean, they aren't usually intuitive and you have to take your eyes off the road for a lot longer than you would do with physical buttons that you can feel the shape of. For example we can all probably adjust most of the features and settings down by the MMI or ventilation controls with just a split second glance or even by feel alone but with a fiddly, odd-shaped touchscreen like the D5 appears to have, I'm not a fan.

The new Range Rovers are the worst for this, you have to sit right up to get a decent angle to see the screen, have to push the screen hard once you've found the features you need, and even with a matt finish to the screen you've got no chance if the sun is shining through the pano roof. Same as in a convertible really.

Tesla on the other hand has that huge iPad-like screen with simple vibrant displays and menus that make sense, so it's not all bad if they are well designed.

As a quality, refined motor, its as expected.

As an 'upgrade' from previous models, its a joke.

It is very well built, in the same way as the D4. I mean, exactly, the same way as the D4.

Audi can't make the boot bigger and throw in a couple of touch screens and call it a brand new model. It will have to eat motorway miles like a D4, and back roads like a D2 for me to even vaguely be interested....

On the plus side, it really does make the D2 a far more collectable piece of kit, followed shortly behind with the D3.

I couldn't disagree more Ian - of course its a new car, every panel is different and the interior couldnt look more different. I accept what you say about using stuff from an existing parts bin here and there but wait until you drive it and then hopefully you will agree its a huge step forward - everything I've seen test drive wise is confirming that the ride and smoothness of the car is a massive step forwards and having also seen it in the flesh and felt the build quality I just dont feel that I can agree with your "scathing review"!!

It's growing on me for sure, it is a bit drab on the outside but the interior and tech really make up for it. Great review, thanks for posting.

We'll need to agree to differ....

The D3 looks nothing at all like a D2. Not one single bit. Not from any angle. Anywhere. And a D4 looks absolutely nothing at all like a D3.

Looking at the D5 up close, along with no marketing whatsoever about it being the new model, I genuinely had to double take to convince myself it wasn't a D4.

It just feels like they couldn't really be bothered. Or didn't have the budget. Or both.

If it were a D4 clone, that drove more like a D2. Wow. I'm in.

But If I had north of 50K to spend replacing my D4, I just don't think I'd feel like I'd upgraded. I'd have taken my iPhone and simply bought a new iPhone with slightly fewer scratches on it....

Coming from a D3, yes, it will look amazing. But from a D4.....

I'm genuinely hoping to be proven wrong.....

I understand where you're coming from but surely your point is not due to just non-imaginative design, but more due to regulations and safety dictating design to the point where all cars in each category are gradually becoming the same basic shape etc. I guess also the kit going in to these cars is restricting the designer's ability to make changes that in many cases they would like to. It was apparent when listening to Ian Callum's lecture recently in Glasgow that they have to fight tooth and nail for every 10mm of change in dimensions and are much more led by engineering and cost considerations that hee ever wanted to be - he didnt even want to go down the e-pace f-pace i-pace route but had to bow to the pressure of sales demand and increased profitability for the business as these models are/will become so popular that they help financially support all the "good stuff" more!

I can see IT's point, side profile is very much a D4 and one could easily argue that it looks like a facelifted D4.
It's rather a pity as looks were never a strong point with the D4.
I really like the rear end except for the fake exhaust tips.

it just seems to be the last Audi model to get the current design language instead of the first.

The 2016-on D4 looks how it should have looked at inception back in 2010 instead of that it looked rushed, too bland and not flagship enough..

In 2015, a D4 facelift along the lines of D5 would have kept it abreast of lesser models until a new flagship D5 in 2017 which should have been a bit more adventurous than this D5.

Don't event get me started on clown adverts
