also I got it a bit wrong about payout fees on miningrigrentals. Their rental fee is 3% and payout is fixed at 0.0009BTC so it's only better than Nicehash with 0.09-0.1BTC

Nice work on the GPU rig
Miningrigrentals was a good find. I've had chance to play with it myself now (on just one of the L3+ miners so far) and I've already had a couple of rentals. Like you, I've set the price manually. I'll probably keep adjusting the price upwards a little to find the spot where it makes more than it does on NH but still gets rented fairly frequently. Strangely, I find Miningrigrentals makes me feel a lot more 'connected' with the buyers of hashing power than NH does. While it's being rented, I feel a strange sense of responsibility towards the the L3+, knowing that someone has paid to use it for a number of hours. No longer do I feel like I can turn it off and on whenever I like. Presently I'm using the L3s own pool priority switching, with miningrigrentals as the first pool and NH as the second, to automatically fall back to NH when it's not being rented. I notice it's possible to configure fall-back pools in your miningrigrentals rig rental settings too. Are you using that or just the L3's own pool priority switching?

GTX1080Tis moved back to separate motherboard as I could not get them to work properly with splitter, maybe will have another go nest weekend wehn i have more time.
I use second pool settings both on miningrigrental website and locally with Nicehash being second and prohash third. My second L3+ arrived today, all working fine. It was older firmware and second fan running slower and running at higher temp. I updated firmware and temps have gone lower but second fan still runs slower. Overclocked to 481MHz like the other one and running OK. For now I have just pointed it to nicehash but will probably put on miningrigrentals just need to decide if I want to combine them both up as one or to keep as 2 separate.

Well in a bit of a bust of eBay luck, I've picked up a 4x 970 mini rig and a Antminer S7 from the UK. Both a little older on tech but reasonable prices and in the profitable ranges and should give me some idea of the game without too much hassle or vast investments.
The asics box should pay back faster and was a bit cheaper, but the GPU rig is more flexible, upgradable, resale value and more home friendly! Sods law i'm off away for a week, but that should mean they are here to play with once i'm back

The S7 is no longer profitable, if you take electricity usage into account. It costs about as much to run as it makes. It should earn you about £140 worth of BTC per month though (according to NiceHash) if the cost of electricity isn't a concern (or if you can compensate for the running costs by making use of the heat it generates).

Hi there,
In the nicehash calcs i was getting about £60 with 14p a kwh, but noticed about £160 earnings. Will probably put it at work or look at my GFs solar panel set up depending on if it's too much for my office where I currently have a fan heater. However that's also at today's rates and I'm more in it for the longer game rather than the quick buck and i can see future rates making it more profitable About the only thing better than the S7 is the S9 and that's just too tricky to get for me at the moment!

If you've got it at a good price and you're getting free electricity it's probably a good choice. A good cheap way to get started, as you say.
This is what I'm seeing, with an electricity cost of £0.14/kWh Still about £12/month more than the electricity costs though. And £143/month isn't bad if you have access to free electricity.

Oh Dear, looks like D3 is almost a bust. I was hoping it would still do about £15 profit per day by the time i receive it at the end of November/start of December. Now do I buy some more L3+ or spread the risk and buy some S9

Urgh. Not good.
Profitability may return yet though. As long as there's nothing more efficient than the D3, those who are mining it will likely hold rather than sell at a loss, which should drive the prices up, making it profitable again. I think you are probably right about the S9 being a safer long-term bet, due to the global hash-rate stability caused by greater saturation. But I think the greater threat with any ASIC miner is the risk of it being superseded by something much more efficient. I wonder which is the safest bet in that respect: The D3 and L3+ models that have only just been released and seem to be ahead of the competition, or the S9 that has probably been around for well over a year now? ...

There is already something more efficient than D3 but it's also $10k with minimum order qty of 5 and out of stock.
Maybe it's a good time to buy some Dash or other X11 coins and hold on to them for a while until price goes up. I don't think we will see anything more than 2x more efficient than S9 for a long time. And I don't think anything 2x more efficient will ship fast enough in big numbers to make much difference considering Bitcoin network hashrate is equivalent to 800k S9 miners. I think from the first news it would be at least 6 monnths before it makes considerable impact. And S9 would still be desirable by people who get cheaper or free electricity so could be sold at decent price. Look at S7, it makes £120 per month while costs £100 in electricity to run it if you need to pay full UK price but they still sell for £800 on e-bay.
