What's the story with the ten? NOS from Audi, or a special batch or something?

Also, what's with the filter arrangement below the exhaust manifold here:
Yeah NOS. They were kept on the shelf for warranty replacements. When the youngest car passed 10 years old they were all sold off to a surplus dealer.

Its actually a C5 S6 AQJ engine hence the oil filter arrangement - its part of the engine mount on that side. The engine itself is identical to the S8's AQH and AVP though - the 20hp difference between the S6 and S8 is all done in software. The oil filter housing, engine mounts and rear water pipe swap over from the original engine.

Ah, that makes sense.
I remember a thread on Audiworld a couple of years ago where certain US dealers were selling off NOS S6 engines cheap.
Must feel pretty good to get your hands on one (or two!).

Some of you may remember this thread: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=13497 Steve and I worked out a deal and I picked the car up last week. She drove home in limp mode (thats *not* fun with a 2.8!), and doesn't go backwards.

I got a chance to give her a clean today and have a good look around and she's actually in remarkably nice condition. Apart from a dent in the front driver's side wing where someone has tagged the bumper, she's very straight with no dings or obvious bad paint. Amazingly clean and tidy underneath too. She scrubs up nice

The wheels are pretty manky, and obviously there's a trim missing on the driver's door which is easily solved.

She's covered in some odd overspray, evenly distributed over the whole body.
You can see the light coloured specks here:

No idea how that happened, but it comes off with the clay bar

I did a wing and some of the bonnet and I think she'll look superb after a damn good detail.

So... what's happening with this one? If you read the other thread, you'll know the vultures were circling and I fully intended T42 to be a parts car just for the black interior, but I've had something of a change of heart having cleaned her up since I've always loved Ming Blue.

The reasoning is thus:

T42 is probably the lightest model of D2 available in the UK - front wheel drive, no double glazing, no sat nav, no xenons, no headlight washers, no parking sensors. In fact, the only two options she has are auto dimming mirrors (which are knackered anyway) and phone prep. Apart from FWD, which is easily sorted, that makes her the ideal recipient for...

This!

I was going to put this in my FE, but T42 has changed my mind, so the FE will be getting a rebuilt V8 and manual gearbox and then sold to buy go-fast turbo things

Is that the Avus Silver one with Red interior (and broken valve) that you picked up with my help?
If so, I'd have thought it would be of more interest with a rebuilt engine and the standard auto box, becoming a very nice FE appealing to a select group of connoisseurs.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Yeah that one. Its got no engine, no gearbox (broken), and no wheels (all fubar) so the only thing it does still have is red seats. If it wasn't an FE it wouldn't be worth rescuing at all. Its certainly not economically viable to rebuild the auto box to then sell it.
