Default Err... winter tyres

Ok, so I've been looking at winter tyres because my summer are nearly dead and I think I can nurse them into October, if that happens, I'm thinking about moving these wheels onto winter work and when summer comes buying new wheels and tyres.

So, winters at 275, yokos, aplins or something else?

Alpins are my favourites, we don't get much ice/snow here but they are also excellent in cool and wet. Warm performance is OK and to my surprise they did not wear out when I left them on for summer. That being said I liked old PA3 model better than PA4, have no experience with the latest PA5. Also this experience is on smaller tyre size on A6 as doing less than 2k miles on S8 it's not feasible to have 2 tyre sets but next time I change tyres I will probably go for winter tyres on S8 all year round instead of summer tyres or possibly Crossclimate if they will make them in the required size as for now they are only available in smaller sizes.

Pirelli Sottozero W240 Serie II here, and I seem to keep them on longer and longer each year. Good all-weather tyre, NLA I think except as runflats which I don't want.
My Michelins on 20's now only go on for the summer "show" season.

Sean (Steamship) was running winters all year, though he is in Northern Ireland.....
(Though IIRC he did have different tyres on for the summer meet)

I might look at the Crossclimate tyres for the Volvo when it needs some.

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Like Ainar, Michelin Pilot Alpins get my vote - and last forever, as a bonus.

yeah, I had Aplins on my old 80 (with 1.8T conversion) and they were mega in standing water and snow, but I also ran the Vredesden Quatrac 4 on my cab in both hot and over the snow covered mountains in switzerland and they were excellent (sadly not available in this fitment)

My main concerns are the Aplins are some £100+ a tyre more than the Yokos, but if they are worth it, then its worth the outlay

Its been lovely weather today, seems odd talking about winters

Or go to DM Tyres, like Ainar and I did, and get part-worns with 7mm tread each for £50 each .

I had Alpins all through last winter and the winter before. Didn't take them off this year until well into June. Great tyre. Plenty of grip in the wet, yet not too noisy and good for high-speed motorway driving.
