Question Which oil spec?

Hello
Call me whatever you like, but after reading a lot on the web I still don't know which spec of Castrol Edge I should use for my car - I find it beyond frustrating.
I'm after Castrol Edge 5W30, but is it C3, LL or any other of the many A or B spec as quiet few of them would match the V10.
One guy said the C3 or LL is the BMW spec where the other is the Audi spec.
Castrol website only shows 5W30 after typing in my reg so they are not very helpful.
There is a huge possibility that I am overthinking it due to my an@l way of approaching many things in life.

I've decided to do service my self this year:
- Wynns engine flush
- Oil and filter (Castrol oil and Mann or OEM filter)
- Fuel filter (Mann or OEM)

That's it really.
Other filters were done 3500 miles ago along with coil packs, plugs, flaps delete and many other things.

Thank you in advance

Hi Marcin,

C3 is VW502 spec, and LL is the newer VW504. What's the oil spec in the owners manual for the V10?

I think 504.00 and 507.00 supersede all of the old VW specs. If you look at Qunatum Longlife III 5w30, it seems to be the oil of choice for D3 owners. It's dead cheap on eBay, wherever you look. It's also what we used to use at work when we had an 'unspecified' VAG franchise.

If you want some extra research for the sake of variety, look into 10w60 oil.

Morning guys
Sorry for the delay and all the input so far.
I've got to check what the oil spec should be, but I won't settle for anything else than Castrol. TPS oil for £2.80 per litter won't cut it, but thanks for the tip anyway.

I looked into 10W60, but I don't think this oil is suitable for my engine...or is it??
It's ok for V10 engine in R8 GT, but is it ok to use on S8??
One I checked was Castrol Edge Sport and Castrol Edge Supercar, both 10W60.

Thanks once again

I would say no. But the full answer really depends on how hard you drive your V10 Marcin. Are you frequently hitting the rev limiter? Using the paddles to keep the engine above 5k rpm? Track time?

The R8 GT is probably expected to be driven hard and the odd track use resulting in a higher engine temp and thus an oil which has a specific viscosity at that engine temp. Also, is this a dry sump V10 like the Lamborghini?

Connect up VCDS and log the oil temp and RPM so we'll know the peak and usual temp with your driving style. With this we can see if 10w60 is for you.

The correct viscosity should be used for the working temp of the engine.

The downsides of the thicker 10w60 is greater friction when cold resulting in a loss of power to the wheels, also slight localisation of heat spots as the oil is thicker and slower to move.

Quantum is made for VAG UK by BP, who own Castrol

This is a label from a drum of Platinum 5W40:

I put Longlife III 5W30 in everything except the old TDIs which get Synta 10W40.

Quantum III 5w30 for me as well. Bought 2 x 5 litre containers of it ages ago and just take them empty to a local VAG specialist for them to fill up cheap from a drum of it whenever I change my oil. To be fair, it's usually cheap enough on ebay - around £45 for 10 litres delivered.

Mikki, think I had Castrol GTX 5w40 in my Lupo (1.7 SDI).

Hmm..OK

Just looked at the spec of Castrol Edge Supercar 10w60 and it's definitely no good.

Could someone confirm if Castrol Edge Sport 10w60 is suitable please?
Spec says: ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4
Manual says: In exceptional circumstances, if the engine oil level is too low and you cannot obtain oil specification for your vehicle, you can put in a small quantity of oil conforming to the specification ACEA A2 or ACEA A3.

Is ACEA A3 same as ACEA A3/B3 ??

https://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/F...RAE-9J2FVL.pdf

I use paddles quiet often and I like the red line, not all the time of course, but quiet often 4000-5000rpm at least.
Other timesn I do drive in Sport (auto) where gear changes are around 3500-4000rpm
All the other occasions, fairly rare, in D (auto) where gear changes are below 3000rpm.

If Castrol Edge Sport isn't the best call as Matt said, then I'll be getting 22 litres of Castrol Edge 5W50 LL spec and do the following:

1. Can of Wynns engine flush - 10min idle & 10min 2000rpm
2. Drain oil and fit cheap oil filter (if such a filter exists)
3. Pour approx. 10l of fresh Castrol oil
4. Can of Wynns engine flush - 10min idle & 10min 2000rpm
5. Drain oil, fit genuine oil filter and new sum plug with new washer
6. Pour approx. 10l of fresh Castrol oil.
DONE

I know it is a ''bit'' an@l, but if this is the 1st time where I'm doing the service not Audi garage, then I want it done properly, flush it properly and get all the old oil out hence 2 fill ups and flushes.

If anyone sees anything very wrong with this process the please do say so

I hear you guys, but I'm not convinced Castrol is putting same 5W30 oil everywhere just under different brand/name.
I just don't believe £2.80 per litre Quantum is identical to £10 per litre Castrol Edge.
