Will your potential job location be inside the m25?

Jim - It will be 200 miles each day, I will be based in one set location and won't need to travel for work - hence no company car.

Adrian, I will be based in Central London... Yeah, I know, traffic/parking etc... So I am more then likely going to get a place there. But I thought the question was an intresting one nonetheless. If I drove, I would have to park on the outskirts then tube it anyway.

Well, yes, maybe I'm slightly biased but I wouldbt attempt a daily commute of that distance in anything less than the best. Thats the kind of thing an 8 is built for, but it will still make a very long day

My round trip to Birmingham is 260 miles. I can do it in the 8 and think not much of it, but the S4 was noticibly harder work, even though it was auto. A manual would be even worse, especially with any sort of traffic jam.

Radar cruise, auto box and big fuel tank for decent fuel range would be top contenders for me with that commute. Then you can bat on with driving and forget the rest.

And if you're new city isnt quite landing you the 7 figure salary, then its gonna have to be a diesel.

LPG wont cut it as the range will be pants......

Certainly not a seven figure salary

Just got out of Ranj's S8 as of 5 minutes ago, what an interior, what seats!! I'm sure the D3 seats cannot compete with the D2 ones, can they?

If I end up with this job and I did decide to commute then it would be a D3 TDI, not a W12 I'm afraid Guy.

Just asking as if you are exploring the moving option, go for somewhere inside the M25 as it'll halve the cost of any season ticket - speaking from experience as someone who used to spend £2500 a year for the privilege of standing on a train to and from work.....worth noting that when I lived in Sutton, inside the M25 the cost was about £900, 8 years ago, and when we moved it literally doubled. It's only 10 miles from one to the other.....

I wouldn't even dream of commuting into London - even to a tube station - from as far away as you are. You lose too much of your life in transport to have anything approaching a normal social life! I had colleagues that commuted daily from Portsmouth, Eastbourne etc etc and they'd spend 4 hours a day on the train. That didn't include any tube time either.

One colleague only used to commute to his home in Taunton when he couldn't get a £10 travelodge room in London, which is fine if you don't mind living out of a suitcase all week and lugging your stuff from one armpit hotel to another each night. He also quite liked avoiding his Mrs and kids I suspect

Where we are is an hour door-to-door into Westminster, which is do-able daily. Much further and I wouldn't have been able to hack it. Look at options on the right side of London to only need mainline or tube as it cuts the cost loads - anything involving a bit of both is an utter ball-ache and deeply unpleasant during the summer months especially. I know loads of people who've taken up cycling in central London to avoid the tube so Boris Bikes are an option lol

Parking an '8 without paying through the nose for parking on top of your other expenses will be a major problem too in the rush hour....

In London... If it's more than just inside the M25 I certainly wouldn't entertain driving if I could manage it. Hate driving in London. That would add a considerable amount of stress and time to your commute.

I'd look carefully at public transport and see if you can get there comfortably and quickly, and where from.
That depends on where you'll be in London - can you say which area/road and the nearest tube stations?

(My wife commutes daily into Westminster and it's reasonably quick from where we are outside the M25.)

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Slightly different suggestion - if it was me, I'd buy a 1 year old Skoda Superb Elegance Estate CRD (don't knock it till you've tried it....), park it at somewhere like Watford Junction and get the train in from there.

But you'd have to be able to live with the badge...

Aylesbury Vale Parkway is reckoned to be quite good - not sure of parking.
End of the line and goes to Marylebone in reasonable comfort.
