Well there is no denying that Mackies have done well for many people on here but Tony didn't have such a good experience.
We would all be wise to remember both the good and the bad. As far as the sucky machine is concerned I can see the logic in what Marcin was trying to point out as was explained to him was the sucky machine will actually be pulling vacuum on the gearbox to suck oil out of it. Now shaft seals by their nature are only designed to seal in one direction and do so by pressure behind the seal. It is possible in theory to damage seals or disturb how they are sitting by pulling a vacuum against its normal direction of operation. Personally I think the best way to deal with the gearbox oil change is take the whole thing out and drain the torque convertor. That however is not practical so the safest and best alternative is a standard drop and drain, new filter and run for a bit and drain and fill again a couple of times to flush the old oil out. That is however using a lot of oil to flush an old gearbox, as we all know gear oil for the D3 is eye wateringly expensive so one has to way the pro's and con's and decide how they want to pay to play.

Thay is exactly what im talking about and Tony's car could be a perfect example.
I know that Mackies are treated almost like Gods, but... I've just had oil drained and replaced on S8 with exactly same one minus 718ml to make room for Lucas maintainer and all I can notice so far is improvement.

This is a good debate and will provide valuable information to anyone finding it in the future.
Just to throw my 2p's worth in, Chester Transmissions agree with you Marcin. When I was settling the bill, I asked what I should now do to maintain the gearbox. We hadn't previously had a conversation about the sucky/blowy machine but Steve explained that such a machine exists and that he wouldn't recommend it for use in our cars. He said the electronics on them are too fussy for it and he'd recommend changing the fluid conventionally. I think his exact words are that the 'electronics are setup differently'. When I asked him how often, he surprised me by saying he'd recommend changing the fluid it every 18 months to two years because the oil was so expensive. It sounded to me like he really wanted to recommend changing it every year. So, just to update you on the saga, the car is safely back home now, after an epic drive back from Chester. There are so many little niggles that have been fixed by the gearbox working correctly - there's none of that horrible transition between manoeuvring creep and throttled pulling-away; the barely noticeable whine when doing slow manoeuvres is completely gone and the changes are completely seamless and on time (when the fault appeared, it was holding 2nd a little and not wanting to change into 1st). When my car was connected to the ZF diagnostic equipment, it showed the error with the adaptions. Steve told me they usually have figures around 400 but two of mine were 6000! As soon as they were reset, it changed the gearbox behaviour completely and it started working properly. The machine is a trial unit ZF have sent to a couple of transmission specialists and can, apparently, do things other machines can't. Steve knew the equipment Mackies have and said that although it was a good bit of kit, it may not have been able to reset mine. Chester is getting a trial machine soon too. I was playing around with kickdowns and paddle shifting on the way home and everything worked exactly how it should (although I think the Milltek scared a few other road users!). This may be the change from my Hyundai rental sh*tbox to the 8, but the car feels far more torquey than I remember and cruises easier. I'm seeing slightly higher mpg figures than I (vaguely) remember, but they're still pretty eye-watering. The only small downside is I noticed a scraping noise when going over speed bumps and when I pulled over to check, the engine undertray isn't fastened at the front, so was dangling down. I caught it too late, because one corner has a couple of inches of damage. It's a minor point but I thought I'd mention it for the sake of completeness. Overall, I'm as happy as Larry at the moment. I'd forgotten just how together these cars feel and I thoroughly enjoyed the drive home. As a bonus, my driver's door lock button has started working again too! |

Really glad you got it sorted Tony, hoped it would be something like that.
M-A8 what is teh exact Lucas product of which you speak? There appears to be 2 or 3. My gearbox has over quarter of a million miles and shifts as smooth as butter but makes a feint funny noise on some shifts, a bit like guitar handling noise. Maybe it's the hoot, but it has lasted over two fluid exchanges without changing in sound. |

Hi Snap, long time no speak. Hope you are well.
Below is the link and it sounds like slipping issue. I've seen it working and solving the issue within the mentioned 500miles 3.5years ago. It has never came back. Honestly worth every penny. It worked very well in diesel A8s and Q7s and petrol A8s. I wouldn't make stuff up and bullsh1t anyone just for a fun or to score another post and it's all based on real life examples. http://transmissionrepairguy.com/luc...on-fix-review/

My V10 S8 has passed 120k miles so I took it into Makies early this year. I left it with them Thursday afternoon.
Next day, late Friday, I got the call to collect it. When I arrived at Mackies I was told that they had been unable to remove the sump from the gearbox due to seized manifold nuts/bolts, so on the bosses advice, left the car overnight with hot, fresh oil flushing it. The final bill was less than the quote, due to being unable to complete the job as specified, and they took the hit on the £600 (apparently) of oil consumed. The gearbox firmware was updated, as was the oil. Since then I guess the box may be changing a bit faster, but it has always been good with none of the jerky changes I've seen mentioned here on other D3 S8's. I am unhappy that the job was not completed as I expected, but hey ho. Interestingly in parting I was told that mine was the first D3 S8 they had had in and they most certainly would not accept another for this work. At some point I will have gearbox serviced correctly, and this will not be with Makies.

Hmmm, they said yours was the first S8 D3 in for the service? This year? That's weird as I have a receipt from them last year for the S8 gearbox service and firmware upgrade...?

Ugh. So it sounds like the saga isn't quite over yet.
The car is at Audi while they repeatedly fail to diagnose a small knock coming from the front end while doing slow manoeuvres. They called me today to let me know that during the health check, they spotted the transmission is leaking onto the catalyst. They have quoted me for a replacement gasket, bolts and transmission fluid to the tune of £1045. I told them it should still be under guarantee from the place that repaired it, but to check whether it's covered by the car warranty in the meantime, just in case. I called Chester Transmissions who were pretty shocked at the price and said that they would pass on the details of a local transmission specialist who can fix the fault for me under guarantee. They said they'd call me by the end of the day but I've not received a call as yet. Holy cow, can this car not go a bloody week without leaking/seeping/spilling something?! |
