Default Temperature Guage on the blink?

Coming home tonight I noticed that the coolant temperature guage wasn't reading anything at all. When I turned off the ignition it moved very slightly to the left and then slightly to the right (to the first mark) when I turned the ignition back on again.

After a couple or repeats of the above, it went back up to the usual 90C. Just a glitch or is this indicative of a faulty sensor/guage?

mine does that sometimes too Jim, I suspect its the sender thats on the way out as the car runs warm enough, I was just waiting till it goes into Andy for a service and get him to have a look, seems to be a common problem on a number of Audi's if other forums (or is that Fori?) are anything to go on

cheers

might be a sticky thermostat otherwise. . .

it sometimes happens when the car has been driven and stopped for 10 mins or so and then started up again, so the engine is still warm, and the temp guage hardly moves, and then if I switch off and on again it registers 90 again, so I didnt think it could be the thermostat?

cheers

In those circumstances, you're right - the thermostat would be either a sticking then suddenly opening problem or staying shut etc so if it is doing that after 10 minutes then it is unlikely. . .

Popping in to A4Audi again this afternoon to get this and the parking sensors looked at. The thermostat is new, so I don't think it's likely to be that. But today, in addition to the 'all or nothing' readings that I've been getting, it did start to wander up and down a bit (which is what it did when the thermostat was iffy).
More news tomorrow.....

...what a cliff-hanger, eh?

Shame you've had so many little niggly issues on your car Jim, it only has about 45k on it iirc? At least they are niggly though and not serious

Yes, and it still makes me smile every time I drive it!

I was in A4 Audi in Clydebank this afternoon and Andy had the diagnostic plugged in to have a look at the temp guage and the parking sensors. He reckons the temp sensor was "gubbed" (a Glaswegian term which means, as far as I can tell, that something is not functioning within specified limits - or something to that effect! ). So he replaced it whilst I waited with a new sensor off the shelf - £30 and I was away.

And I'm getting a new PDC Controller from a forum member for £35 to see if that sorts out the parking sensors (bl**dy things worked fine at A4 Audi and there was no logged fault, so Andy reckons it may be the controller on the blink.

Just washed the car on a lovely sunny evening - it makes me smile even more when it's clean!
