Right folks, error codes read and bringing up the one, 17114 (Incorrect Ratio).

Garage is recommending a fluid and filter change first, just in case.

Discuss. I'm off to have a little cry.

Well Ross-Tech says:
17114/P0730/001840 - Gear Ratio Monitoring: Incorrect Gear Ratio

Possible Causes
Transmission Fluid contaminated
Transmission faulty (Mechanical Problem)

Possible Solutions
Check Transmission Fluid (Color and Contamination) Replace Transmission Fluid when necessary

Check Transmission Mechanics

Given that a rebuild (if required) is going to cost a fair bit is it worth "trying" a filter/fluid change? That is also not cheap but.....

Does your garage have the capability of removing the gearbox for shipping to a repairer or will the whole car need taking there?

IMO an oil change is a bit of a waste of money at this point, given that reverse works. The best it can do is give a vague indication of what's wrong by the condition of the old oil, but equally it may not tell you anything.

If you want, they could get an oil sample by pulling the small drain plug in the sump. You can remove that plug, get a sample of oil, and put the plug back easily without losing enough to make a difference. Dip some white paper in to the sample to get a good look at it. The oil should be a grey-yellow colour, should smell slightly fishy, and should be clear with no suspended debris.

Whatever it comes out like, there's no point changing it because its either perfectly ok, indicating a mechanical problem, or its not ok, indicating a different mechanical problem If the oil is contaminated, the only way to flush it fully is with a specialist machine. Changing whats in the sump will only get about half of it so won't make much difference.

Tbh all the garage can do at this point is narrow down potential failures, which doesn't help you at all since it'll have to go to Mackies anyway.

Default Quote from my original blown gearbox thread....

Quote from my original blown gearbox thread, as mentioned previously:

"I've just spoken to a chap based on a recommendation from the garage which looks after my A8L. He said he'd take my money all day long with regard to my request for a fluid change - he said it would be a waste of money."

I'd save your money and put it towards what looks like an inevitable rebuild. That's exactly what I did under similar circumstances. MJ's advice is, as always, golden.

Thanks folks, feeling sad but hey, did anyone ever NOT get their gearbox properly sorted, ditch the car and not regret it?! I know now I will regret it so might as well man up and bite the bullet.

I am going to check my breakdown cover very carefully, hopefully i'll be covered but it's a big ask from Isle of Wight. Otherwise i'll have to see if someone can pull the box and I get it shipped up there, I'd much rather get the whole car up there if I can and let Mackies do the lot. Hey, box is knackered, if it drives maybe I should have a final limping 500 mile hurrah overnight with it!

Is there ANY other transmission specialists worth considering? Not for price, but for closeness? Plus when I get to call Mackies to get it booked in, what else shall I ask them to do/look at while they are at it? I am assuming it might be worth getting the F125 switch changed? Do they also do the torque converter? Sorry for my lack of knowledge but I can't afford to get this wrong so any help in dealing with them would be useful.

What do Mackies actually do that is a cut above?

Anyway, even after 4 months and 1500 miles of ownership I love this car enough to get this done. What on earth would you replace it with?!

Plus what's the betting that on my way back from Glasgow my 4 year old, 5000 mile cambelt snaps?! I better check on the cost of a replacement engine, not that I've getting paranoid about this!

Thank you all, I know this is a forum and I haven't actually met any of you but your camaraderie and reading about your experiences has been a massive help, especially in convincing the lady in my life that this car is worth it!

I asked Mackie's about doing that. It might be worth asking again but I'm pretty sure they said they would need the car. They don't have (or didn't have) the necessary equipment for testing the 5HP boxes off the car.

They do have a courtesy car available. Just the one I think though so you need to make sure they reserve it for you of you need it. If it's the same one they've lent me every time so far, it's a silver Astra (petrol) automatic. I think it may be the slowest thing I've ever driven but it's better (and marginally quicker) than walking

They completely strip and rebuild the entire box, including checking/reconditioning/repairing the torque converter. The F125 switch is not normally included in that but I had them replace mine at the same time. I also had them check/replace the rear diff oil.

I think one of the main differences with Mackie is the warranty. A 3 year / 100,000 mile warranty shows confidence in their work. One point to note though is that you do need to have the gearbox serviced by them every year for the warranty to remain valid. I now have an annual weekend away in Scotland every September/October that starts with a visit to Mackie's on the Thursday afternoon. After letting the transmission cool overnight, they do the service on the Friday morning and I spend the rest of the weekend visiting the area.

EDIT: This was my Mackie invoice:

Perhaps a stupid thought, but would ZF in Dortmund be an option - probably closer "as the crow flies"!?

Sergey (Notorious) has done this for a service - definitely worth looking at the relative cost/hassle as the travel distance is probably much the same. A trailer and suitably weighty tow car required though....

Just to add to what Mark/Moltuae said about Mackies: they also (from memory) upgrade the torque converter to a better one.

I'd suggest you give John, the service manager, a call: I'm sure he'll happily talk you through the details of this - you can reach him on 0141 778 4545.

Hmm, interesting idea, going to Dortmund! But that's 2 ferries each way instead of one!

Three and a half large, ouch. Do they take luncheon vouchers?!

As an aside, been checking my breakdown cover. If you break down within a mile of home then it's taking to the nearest garage only but under 'Recovery of the vehicle and passengers' it says this:

'We will arrange help and pay the cost of taking you, passengers and the vehicle to any one place you choose' and excludes transportation to more than one place and transportation of more than 5 passengers

Under what's covered under alternative travel or emergency overnight hotel accommodation it says

'Alternative road or rail travel, or one night’s hotel accommodation for you and up to 5 passengers and also refunding the cost of travel for one person to collect the repaired vehicle' while excluding breakdowns occurring within 25 miles of the home address.

Now, in your humble opinions, does this mean that I can pack a bag, hope it will drive on and off a ferry and about fifteen miles down the road (if it makes it!) and then ring them up to tell them I have a gearbox problem which is ruining my weekend in Glasgow but I have found someone up there to have a look at it while I'm there?!

It feels wrong, I know. But I dread getting quotes for someone to do a 500 mile run with that on a flatbed
