D2 runs and RNS-D, and a totally different TV tuner to the RNS-E units.

They look physically very similar, easy mistake to make.

Its for this reason, you cant just take the nice DVB-T tuner from an RNS-E and drop it straight into your D2.

If you have a factory tuner, along with aerials, its a fair bet the RNS-E was factory as you cant have TV, without a screen.

I was under the impression that the RNS-E could drive an external CD changer, or an AMI and the two were interchangeable. Certainly every B7 brochure I've ever looked at has implied that, although I confess i've never had a B7 with AMI and I think that ship has sailed now...

Ian I think you maybe missed something, this is only/all about my son's S4 B7, hence not being in the D2 section...…

And yes, I did make a mistake earlier, but corrected it, re the different tuner versions.

As for AMI I think, from what I've read, that is actually only available on the Mk2 RNS-E and I don't know when and in what models that appeared.

Did you get anywhere on that, Adrian?

And another question for you, did you (or is it even possible to) enable the AUX-IN functions on the Hybrid tuner? It doesn't appear in the RNS-E menus but maybe that's a coding change?

Hiya

I haven’t used Etka on my laptop for so long it needs to run 20+ updates for each brand before it’ll let me in! I’ll set it going again when I get home, although I can look up the part number that worked from a scan of my old car - there are several part numbers that should work

From memory you lose the aux in option with later tv tuners, but my memory is hazy on that as it wasn’t something I needed to consider (you can wire a RVC direct to RNS-E from memory, although I presume you’re thinking about using the old tuner box to run a free view one piggybacked as an aux in?)

You can, though when I looked at the Kufatec product that specifically says NOT to be combined with TV tuner so I guess it hijacks that connector directly.

So, my guess is that the AUX-IN options are just not there, or not addressable from the RNS-E if they exist. Unlike the TV tuner on a D2 with RNS-C or RNS-D.

I wasn't actually thinking of an add-on DVB-T tuner in fact, just whether the TV Tuner could be used to play music and/or videos from a phone by some means using the AUX-IN.

No, quite aware that its a B7 discussion. The D2 /C5 / B6 RNS-D unit is basically the same thing bar the part number and facia fit.

B7 was too new to ever have an RNS-D as im sure you're aware.

AMI was a confusing term I used. Yes, the universal AMI was available on the Mk II, but the Mk i had either a usb or apple dock available in place of a CD changer.

See here for an example apple dock:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A3-8...kAAOSwawtbXwdw

The USB version looks the same, my grey cells can't remember its exact name to search for one right now and as usual i'm rushing between things this evening...

The RNS-E hardware can handle both a reversing camera and a TV tuner, but I think its an Audi firmware limitation. Its been a few years, but iirc the two were never an option together on any Audi, but the Lambo Gollardo (same RNS-E unit) was available with both rev cam and TV, and the TV tuner would switch to a set input when in reverse and back again from what I remember.

There was a big retro fit discussion on one of the forums about it somewhere...

All that said, wiring any sort of high quality audio into the TV tuner almost always ends up with alternator whine as you have to traverse the whole car several times with the signal before it gets out of the speakers..... Id definitely go for a solution direct to headunit.....

The coding (documented by Ross-Tech) shows the iPod/USB interface as the same coding as the CD changer, so I guess it's "plug and play" if you ever found and installed one.
The full AMI "flag" is in a separate digit of the coding (along with Satellite Radio and AUX-in).

And as I think some of my earlier comments imply, I agree with your view on Audi firmware limitations re TV/camera.
(And of course about direct head unit connection being best)

The "backup" camera is actually on/off in Adaptation channel 4, but I've no idea where/how you can connect it separately. I wonder if you could play games by recoding the unit to be a Lamborghini.....

Edit: The USB dock for an A4 B7 is 8E0 857 925E vs the iPod being …….925D.

Its primitive. So, if you code channel 4, then when the reverse line goes high (or via canbus depending on exact model) then it switches to video input.

If you have a TV tuner, then it will just switch to the last thing you were watching. TV, Aux in, whatever.

The big thing with the lambo was that it would switch to the TV tuner input, and switch the TV tuner to the correct Aux input I believe.

I think folks did try coding in the Lambo settings, but I think they are Lambo firmware specific from memory.

When I had my Ming blue project D2 I went round and round in circles with this. In reality, the reverse camera thing was really hit and miss and kept muddling ntsc/pal setting too. I ripped it out eventually....

Ian, if you couldn't make it work I haven't a hope...….

Are those iPod/USB docking bays any use with modern phones or do they just emulate the CD changer with an iPod or USB drive as appropriate?

Could you actually connect some sort of Bluetooth adaptor and device to the USB version?

Are those iPod/USB docking bays any use with modern phones or do they just emulate the CD changer with an iPod or USB drive as appropriate?

Could you actually connect some sort of Bluetooth adaptor and device to the USB version?
They are music only, and pretty rigid in their old style apple or USB connectors I believe. As you say, they literally replace the CD Changer so doubt there is much scope for modification.

If you want A2DP, then you're into aftermarket kit I don't doubt...
