I have also noticed over the last 12 months how the numbers for sale keep getting fewer and fewer.
eBay and Autotrader just do not have that many anymore. Its a shame as many must be broken for parts the second the gearbox has a wobble or the cambelt service is just too much for the owners. |

That's what scares me, the gearbox, I don't know that much about it but it seems like a fairly common issue....still I wouldn't mind have D2 as long is from someone here and with an@l ''maintenance regime''

Even when they go bang, it's not typically game over, more a question of whether the owner is prepared to/has the cash for a rebuild. As this is c.£3k for rebuild at Mackies, it's likely to be put off some owners, but gives peace of mind for at least 3 years/another 100k miles.
I think there's a hardcore of owners (some of us included…) who will continue to think that a D2 in VGC (for around £5k) + a £3k rebuild is better ownership proposition than an inferior £10k machine that will probably throw up more problems and cost, and lose more value in the long run. |

I would have a D2 with the box sorted every day of the week, I would even take one without the box done and have a few quid in the bank to do it when needed.
A well sorted and looked after D2 is a rare beast and worth every penny. Maybe I need a 2.8 to drive to work in.... |

I guess I'm the odd one out, then. I loved my D2, but I MUCH prefer my current D3 - both in terms of looks and also how it drives...
Go figure...

This post chimes nicely with one I recently posted about what do you get after a D2 S8. Rather than fret about which next car purchase will come close to what the S8 offers, I've realised the answer is to hold on to it and enjoy it for as possible. Any money saved for the next car purchase can be reallocated to the gearbox fund (heaven forbid) and general upkeep.
As mentioned above, decent ones are becoming scarcer so I'm more inclined to appreciate what I've got. Grass isn't always greener and all that |

As for it being 'game over', bad choice of words, I've been very vocal on this forum about people being better off spending the money on a gearbox rebuild than scrapping and buying something else. I did the latter and completely regret it, would defo spend on the gearbox if I had the time again |
