Intermittent ESP Warning
Hi all,
I'm hoping that someone out there has had experience of this issue and found a way to overcome it. I have been experiencing an intermittent ESP warning for a few months now which is really bugging me. Sometimes the warning will flash 3 times and disappear for the rest of the journey other times it will illuminate and stay on for my entire journey. There is no logical connection between oil temp sensor and ESP light. It's to do with:

Mmmmmm , engine torque signal may be reduced due to engine thinking engine oil temp is to high .... it's defaulted to a safer map as safe guard
Gearbox ecu will pick up on this on the network from engine and pass fault over to abs / traction Very often any engine management issue the traction and cruise control will be disabled Jag xf diesels have similar issue but other way round , gearbox oil temp sensor shows oil temp to high and defaults engine to a safer map ... not full limp though but you can feel some power loss , cruise and traction get disabled also Not 100% with the Audi but could be a possibility

Thanks for the replies gents, makes sense now.
I haven't experienced any loss of power or disabled cruise control though! So if I'm looking at the MAF's or TB's is there any logging I can do or tests I can perform to isolate the part at fault? I can clear the fault codes but they return so does it require any type of dealer reset that my full copy of VCDS cannot do? Reset the throttle bodies if that'll help.

My first port of call would be to get rid of that oil overheat code , I would of thought that the engine and gearbox program will not like to see that code

Hi all,
I still have this issues at times and through reading posts all over the place many people have known this issue to arise from faulty wiring. Does any body have a wiring diagram or photo of the alternator wiring? I have read that on other VAG cars there is a 2-pin signal wire from the alternator but looking under mine I have the same 2-pin connector but only one thick blue wire. Is this the case on all A8's as we use bigger/different branded alternators? Thanks

Does your gearbox from cold or semi warm sort of hold on to its gears and change a bit roughly , then when fully warm its all good ?

Some tests ...... from cold plug in your vcds , go to data group 007
Here's mine from coldish engine  Yes the blocks don't give any info ...... here's one I prepared earlier .....  Here's another pic 10 mins of running or thereabouts , notice oil temp !!  When oil temp reverts to a - reading this is when the auto box starts to shift a bit odd and hold gears . By the way all the fault codes you where getting I was getting excatly the same codes . This is pic after a bit more time running , note oil temp has reverted back to ok  Any of the technical chaps want to have a guess at where the oil temp picks its reading from ........it's NOT auto box oil temp by the way Just for fun dontchaknow....
