I forgot to ask about the oil and possibly should have done.

The trip to any of the ZF places that's been recommended is not really an option at the moment but then in the long run maybe it would have been worth it?

Who knows.

Its done and the car drove better when changing gear on the way home but a proper drive to work will let me know.

The garage that did the work cleaned the car, did a full VCDS scan and checked the the gearbox oil for issues (not sure what involves but they showed me some and that don't mean any thing to me either, so I just smiled.) and said everything with oil seemed fine and the filter looked clean.

Hopefully after this year has gone I'll be able to get the gearbox done with different oil, software update and such at the ZF garage.
New house, 2 new cars and a wedding is not doing my car spending any good at all.

Hi all

New member here, I have been waiting to be approved by mods for some days.....

I just purchased an A8 4.2FSI 2007 MY with 72k miles. I am reading the forums with interest, and having been active on PH for 12+ years, BMW, GTR, Porsche and Merc forums as need arose over the years I can see that this board is no exception in having a wealth information. Thanks for that, hopefully I can contribute in return.

With regards to ATF service and gearbox work etc. I would like to recommend Dartford Transmissions for those of us closer to London and South East. I have had ATF fluid changes on my ex-cars including BMW 540, BMW 550 and Mercedes S Class. Dartford Transmissions do have the equipment to extract and flush the gearbox and converter so you get all the old fluid out. They are a small outfit and difficult to find the first time, but they will give you a lift to the station and back etc.

None of my previous cars were 4 wheel drive though, although I have seen Audis with Quattro there before - and I have asked for a quotation and will let you know.

I have no commercial interest in DT, just a satisfied customer for almost 10 years. I use the same screen name on PH and other forums just for peace of mind.

I hope that's useful, back to reading the forums with interest!

Happy New Year
Christer

Welcome Christer.
We all love photos here so do start your own thread to introduce yourself and your car.

PS We have another Christer here, though that's a surname, but it made me do a double-take!

Just by way of update, it seems Dartford Transmissions have only done a few A8's, so as a long-term customer they have been honest with me in that respect. I am taking my car to Guy, instead of reinventing the wheel......

Well, I visited Guy on Saturday and had him change the gearbox fluid and the diff oil whilst I was there. Apparently the gearbox oil was pretty clean but as I had no record of it being done in the 73k miles the car has done I thought it best to do it anyway.

Interestingly or not, on the way down with cruise set to 80 on motorways and speed limitish everywhere else with little traffic the car averaged 24.8mpg on the way down, but 28.8mpg on the way back. Admittedly slightly different route on the way back, but the car seems to "freewheel" better after the gearbox and diff oil change, anyone else notice that? The gearchanges are more or less the same.

Anyway, thanks to Guy for making this all a lot easier than trying to go down the Audi/ZF specialist route!

Well done Guy, another satisfied customer.
Goes to show that it is always good to heed what forum members say.
