its not good, sounds like this usually means the imminent death of the transmission.

Have a read of this article.

Just waiting on the filter gasket and oil arriving, so fingers crossed it fixes the problem.
If the gear box is knackered what are my options ? new box? refurb box? have it rebuilt?
Also, is there a better box from another model that can be fitted

just pulled the oil out and it looks like it was changed not to long ago.
the pans magnets have no bits stuck to them
all I can do now is replace the filter and new seal and fill it again and see if the noise has gone.

now refill and filter change. have ran car as per instructions and sitting under the car, the screeching sound when revved sounds to be coming from water drain holes near the clutch area.
the sound is very light when its sitting, but when revved the sound is worse when you take your foot off the peddle.

Default Screeching noise? A tad Tardis-like in my opinion.

My previous A8 (1999 FL) used to make a very similar noise when pulling away from cold and seemed to disappear after the box/fluid had warmed up. I'm sure it was a sign of impending doom as the gearbox in that car suffered from transmission thump when changing down gears when pulling up to a set of traffic lights.

I never found out the reason behind the noise as I let the car go when I left the UK to live in Uruguay for 18 months. My current A8L is parked up awaiting a new or reconditioned gearbox. It failed on me 10 days ago near Gatwick but managed to get the old girl back home in limp-home mode i.e. 5th gear only. I inadvertently stuck my post under the Engine section which was my mistake.

Current costs are £1700 for a repair/replace broken bits going up to £2700 for a full recon and then the executive option of £4500 from Audi. The £2700 quote was from the ZF agent in Croydon (Pitlake). Current car has 128K on the clock, and my previous car was slightly higher at 139K.

been told it Looks like broken PCV - too much air is sucked from crankcase and you hear rear main seal. Open oil cup - if engine dies or sound disappears - it's it! ld
