I will plug it in again later and get the full description from VCDS....my thoughts are that it is all contained within the gear selector in the interior of the car but I'm not sure completely!

The release cable for the gear shift is behind the ashtray so that you can take it out of park and drive it!

I've found out what the problem part is now 4E2 713 189 , stupid amounts of money from the stealer....what are the chances?

They do indeed have a f125 switch, its part of te mechatronic unit and can be seen if the pdf in this thread

How did you come to the conclusion it was the gear stick guide, I'm sure we could all benefit from your findings?

As the fault you describe usually is the f125 switch on the trans

BTW if it is the part you mentioned there are plenty of complete gear selector assembly on ebay for 30-40 quid so better than forking out over 100 for the guide

Yep!

It's not a Quattro so I think this was quite normal for a LWB.

The fact that it is an ex Audi Chauffeur car probably has something to do with it too!
