I tested mine a couple of days ago in a big jam in Croatia. Almost 1 hour stopped or crawling with 32C ambient.
With viscous fan apparently working (unable to stop the blades with a rolled up newspaper), and the AC on which I assume is speed 1 of the AC fan, the temperature slowly climbed from 90C to 105C and stayed on 105C.
My AC fan speeds 1 and 2 are not working via the radiator thermo switch. Only speed 3 works via the instrument cluster when temp gets to around 115.

So in my case the first fix is to replace the thermo switch (and check the fuses first)

As a slight aside (I'm going to check the viscous fan today after a run), how do you tell so accurately what the coolant temperature is? The 90 degree marker is clear, but which one is 120 and what are the ones in between (and before 90 for that matter) as there seems to be no obvious scale as far as I can see.
And how did you tell which AC fan speeds were working Goran?

105 is within acceptable range, and these engines do often run quite hot. The gauge on the cluster is conditioned to read 90 between 85 and 105 actual iirc. The only way to know for sure is with VCDS from the ECU which measures it directly.

Bizarrely, the cluster passes a guesstimated temperature reading to the climate control based on how long the engine has been running and the operating conditions, despite the fact that it knows the temperature from an actual sensor

But my question is, for example, which division on the gauge is 105, which is 120 and, for that matter, what does each division right up the scale represent? Only the division for 90 seems obvious to me.

I've heard that before, so in summary the display is really only an "indication" at best.

So, to answer Jim, the scale is pretty meaningless. You need VCDS to get the actual readings direct from the sensor.

Well, I've just carried out the rolled up newspaper test and was able to stop the viscous fan (with the gauge just a tad over 90) with just a little shredding of the paper! And, with the engine off, the fan turns easily by hand with the engine hot and cold. So, a knackered clutch seems to be a probable cause of the over-heating in traffic (and under load on steep hills on warm days), yes? The electric fan is running at 90.

Next question, is it an easy DIY job? And I don't mean easy by MJ's standards! And does anyone have instructions and a part number?

As to the gauge itself, it seems someone was having a laugh with it! It doesn't give you the coolant temperature, even though it could, and the divisions marked on the gauge are what exactly? There are 2 between 50 and 90, I don't know which one is supposed to be 120 and I assume that the red line just means 'oh s**t!' Someone went to the trouble of laying the gauge out with non linear divisions that mean sweet FA, it seems; er, 50,60,70..90? 100,110,120 (maybe),130,140? See photo below:

Hi Jim, I was reading the temp on the climate control display. As Mikki says its not accurate, I compared it to VCDS Engine advanced measuring blocks which gives a different reading.
I was hoping the climate control readout is only a little bit off but if it giesstimates it then its no good.
The dial on the cluster only registered the change when the climate control display went to 99. After that they seem to track in line but I still wouldnt trust them for an accurate reading.

Mike rang me he is making a few aluminium shrouds for the electric fan Mikki posted. Drop him a line if you want to switch to electric.

To get to the hidden climate control unit menu, with AC on, press the recirculate button and upper climate control button (one with up arrow) simultaneously. Then scroll through to channel 102 for the dodgy engine temp readout.

I’m not planning to switch to an electric fan, but it does seem to be that the clutch is at fault, so I’m planning to replace it soon. But do I need a genuine Audi part (if not, then what) and is it an easy DIY fix?

Never done it myself but it looks like a relatively straightforward job. Page 148 here:
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...8&d=1420349882

Assuming your engine is the same as mine Jim (AVP), the part number appears to be 077121350D
http://www.realoem.me/Audi/RDW/A8Q/2...1/121/121095#5

Looks like they're available from about £30 for a cheapo brand, up to about £70-£80 for a Febi Bilstein.
