Thanks all, I've not decided anything yet, but I popped into MIJ in Walsall on the way back from work in Birmingham today.

They're quoting £380 for sports cats, plus £375 for a replacement exhaust (mid-tuned), should I decide to do that at the same time. Steel used is T304, cats are 2 year warranty and the exhaust is a lifetime warranty. I may call Revo as well, as they did the remap on my s8 a couple of years back (or rather, Ben did..)

I seem to remember that the REVO remap had already coded out the post cat lambda on my car, so in theory you should have no problem with fitting the sports cats, though I went with 200 cell rather that 100.

What did you do in the end?

As noted in another thread one of my cats, which I know was rattly when I bought the car (factored into the price), has finally got the point where it MUST be dealt with.

It looks like a new OEM type-approved one will work out at well over £1000 after labour, VAT and some fixings are included, which is in the ball park I expected.

Sadly our sponsors don't have one available as that would reduce the bill radically. Though they do have a slightly earlier version that would need a hole drilling and nut welding on for the post-cat lambda. Beyond my pay grade and not sure if I can find anyone reliable to do it.

Do you want me to see what price I can get from TPS? They usually offer a decent discount for bits I order

Thanks Adrian, worth asking if it's no trouble. It's 4D0 131 701 DP.

Though my local independent said it would have to come from Germany and would need a couple of extra bits (sleeve and flange or gasket IIRC?).

I presume they will factor in a "trade discount" profit on that or on the recycled old one as the labour charges seemed minimal.

I bought and fitted one of these to my old 2002 S8 FE (link below / not type approved). I needed to cut away part of the bracket but otherwise it fitted up perfectly & passed MOT emissions without any issues. I only replaced the one that needed doing, in my case the OS. I would not do more than you have to.

It's not an MOT fail to have a non type approved cat fitted, provided it passes emissions - which is all that matters for any car and that one is fitted when it should be.

The trade price is still horrendous - at best 10% off

I'm seeing my MOT-tester mate later this evening and will see what he thinks.

My understanding is that it's actually illegal to sell or fit a non-approved catalyst for cars built/registered after a specific date around 2001.

It is not illegal to supply and fit a non type approved cat for a car pre (insert date) 2002 intra trade.

It is against the law for a retailer to supply to the trade and for them to fit a non type approved cat to a car which should have a type approved cat fitted.

It is not illegal for a private individual to fit a non type approved cat to his/her car.

Nowhere in the MOT test criteria is it stated that a non type approved cat will fail a car if fitted to a car that was produced after the type approval date (whatever month it is in 2002).
