MJ Have you run out of cleaning rags yet?

With my experience of hospital visits over the last few weeks I'm thinking that you could do with some kind of surgical tool trolley. The type with removable top trays. This could save you bending down to the floor so often. Fill a tray with bits, put it away and start on a new tray.

Sorry, just a really old fogey enjoying your incredible workmanship and trying to save you back problems as the years go by.

I appreciate the way you work, top level workmanship. It would have been a pleasure to have you on my team in the days when I dabbled in greasy bits. Long may you reign.

Plenty of rags, but I ran out of degreaser! I do have tool trolleys

Looking much better now





De-tarred the wheel arch return while I was in there. Much easier when you can stand in the arch facing out!





Engine bay looking sharp now too





Other side tomorrow when I've picked up more cleaning products

53 hours in now btw.

Other side cleaned up



All the paintwork under the bonnet is treated to a coat of sealant to try and stop it getting quite so grubby again. Whichever beancounter at Audi thought it was acceptable to not bother lacquering the engine bay needs a serious hosenzieher Trying to remove the oil stains without also removing the paint is a real pain!

I bet it's never been that clean since it was in the showroom.
Great effort and result and it looks like things are taking shape quite nicely - barring back-ordered parts (hope I haven't jinxed anything there).
We'll have to remember to put that undertray on it when I come to visit, to help keep as much road crud off those cleaned bits.

So what's the score with the steering?
Did the D2 have 2 different types of steering and if so, was one an upgrade/downgrade over the other? Or did Audi change it after a certain date?
I'm intrigued.
Both of us could tell that something was different when driving it compared to our other D2(s).
I actually liked the extra lightness in the steering on the red car.

I loved the Servotronic on my PF S8.

It was amazing how incredibly stable it was at high Autobahn speeds as well, just felt as if on rails.
(The owner before me had it de-restricted and reckoned he got to 175mph, which whilst it may have been on the speedo was probably somewhat less)

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

On the D2, power steering came in two flavours;

1N1 - Standard Steering
1N3 - Servotronic Steering.

The latter is specifically weighted based on speed, so performing slow speed parking manoeuvres for example has an amplified power steering effect, where motorway driving at higher speed it is less so, giving a more solid feel.

Interestingly, servotronic was standard from day 1 on the D3....

Its also worth noting that in my experience, steering does always feel just that bit lighter on the 2.8 Quattro anyway, as its not got quite the same bulk as the V8 weighing it down.

and the S8 non-Quattro is a different beast altogether as you'll spend all day fighting the torque steer lol....

Everything is nice and clean now, including the rain tray / scuttle area, and Botang's Hole sorted.



Unfortunately I discovered the wiper mechanism is worn out - the usual rusty ball joint, and one of the spindles rattling about so that'll need replacing as well.

I didn't take a pic, but the rack and pipework are back in now, and the flywheel bolts finally came from Germany so after the Malaysia F1 qualifying I'll be re-attaching the engine and gearbox and putting all the final bits back on them ready to go back in tomorrow.
